Description Just a little thing I decided to throw together. The majority of the images in my gallery are sketches that I've coloured, and I tend to get asked how I go about colouring them, so I made this.

I tend to just colour my sketches as opposed to going over them as I find I have a bit of an unsteady hand when it comes to inking, and though doing it digitally is easier, I feel something is lost in the transition from sketch to lineart. Not that there's anything wrong with the process, of course; I just personally prefer how sketches look. :>

The filter I mentioned can be found here . When you get to the page, just press ctrl+f and type in "ghost", and it'll take you to the plugin that contains that filter. It comes with a bunch of other filters, but you don't have to add those to your plugin library if you don't want to. I use Photoshop CS3, although there may be versions in which the plugin doesn't work.

great tutorial! it really helps but I have one question: what format do you scan your images in? . jpeg or .PNG

They're usually JPEGs when I scan them in, but once I've coloured them I save them as PNGs.

It seems like the tool you use is basically a beefed up threshold filter.
I wish it worked on elements 5 ;_;

Oh hey, this looks neato. I'll have to try it some time. ^_^ Beats having to re-draw sketches and all.

...I've got no clue if it will work or not on elements, but thanks. xD;

Ahh it's an add on filter, that's why i've never heard of ghost.
putting the pencils on the top later and set the layer to overlay works the same.

I tried doing that but it made the sketch change colour as well.
