Red in the games would kill Ash without even talking, but Red in the Manga would probably get along well with him! And yeah, Red's way up at the top, but in my opinion, Ash's best pokemon (Charizard, Infernape, and Pikachu (duh)) could possibly give a couple of Red's a run for their money!
