CARTOONMANIA is the name of an animated series on Youtube created by Matthew Littlemore. The show is about a fictionalized version of Matthew living with 320 of his characters and all the shenanigans they get into. The series ran for a little bit before ending with a 97-minute movie that got a bit of praise for basically being a one-man project (from what I recall, anyway). But any future ideas Littlemore had for the show were soon crushed, as he was called out for his abusive behavior and for making lewd artwork of his underage characters. Hmmm, sound familiar?

Honestly, I didn't know who Littlemore was when I discovered the CM movie on YT. I just saw it on my recommended page when it was new, and I always give credit to animators who can crank out a whole movie by themselves, especially on a program that wasn't even created for animation in the first place. It takes a lot of commitment to tackle such a feat!

And then I watched the movie.

I don't have a problem with the artstyle - I started drawing in that quasi-Garfield style when I was a kid, so I don't want to sound too biased The real problem is how the movie relies on so many over-done cartoon cliches and rarely does any inventive spins with them. You got the obnoxious twins who you're supposed to find endearing, generic cartoon gags, tiring abundance of Hanna-Barbera sound effects (especially the Scooby-Doo running bit), and the awful "you care more about your career than you do about us!" trope. Heaven forbid you want to find a job that'll help support over 300 characters living in your house!

Then there's the strange fixation on the shippings between the two Tiger Twins (who look like they would be related, but they aren't?) and the girl sheep and a Casper-inspired computer virus. Keep in mind that these four characters are kids. Ew.

On the plus side, when Littlemore does his trademark yelling, he makes for a decent Jon Arbuckle?

As cringe as the show is, I feel like I'd be betraying myself if I didn't try my take on the Stanley character (left).
