Description
Note: The armor design is the basic plate armor from Dragon Age 2. The character is mine!...And no, "Hawke" is not REALLY her last name! It's just the role she played.
Just trying out some new textures and a lot of patience, as well as a much needed pic of Chrish in some armor!
To be honest, I REALLY loved how my character's looks translated into DA2, but without tuner or capture card, I was unable to take a picture to show off. Instead, I had to sit on a paused screen and draw this. (I have to say, it's so much easier to draw directly from a reference!)
But now, part of me wonders whether it was a mistake to design my Hawke after Chrishankhah in Dragon Age 2, It made the RPG aspect a lot more difficult because I practically forced myself to choose options based on what I think Chrishankhah would say. (That means more diplomatic responses than humorous ones. Bugger!)
Suffice to say, Chrish has been bitter about magic ever since Sanagis fell. But she seemed to do a 180 from that in DA2 -- supporting mages at every chance. In her defense, though, Sanagisians aren't born mages, whereas mages in the DA2 universe are. You can't exactly punish someone like that for something they have no control over, so it's really not out of character, it just puts her in an interesting circumstance.
I also inadvertently wound up in a romance with one of the LI's, Anders. (That got interesting, story-wise!) Canonically, that just isn't something Chrish would do. But I blame my own weak heart -- for which my OC just had to deal with the consequence. (I mean... he loves cats! Who can resist?) That, and I didn't know what the heart option was doing until he attacked her face. Durp
I wonder if that makes it a fiction-in-a-fiction? Ficteption?
By the way, I mentioned that I was trying out some textures. There is an earlier, less textured version of the picture here for comparison: [link]
Credit where due -- the texture brushes are from [link] !
Update -- With the PC version, I finally *could* get some screenshots of her in game. See this journal for comparison, as well as her new outfit!

Ahah, it's fine! And thank you!
I try to keep my own work in my icon on here. It throws me off, sometimes, when I see a deviant with an icon of really nice work and it turns out that they had it commissioned, lol. I can't blame people for doing it, I just like to represent my own stuff.

This is absolutely stunning!
Her expression is beautiful- I keep returning to her face. So serene and caring. I keep wanting her to look at the "camera" / viewpoint so she'd look at me. I think I would get chills! And I want to pet her silky hair.
Your grasp of shading metal is inspiring. O_O Her breastplate is shiny without overpowering the image, which I think would've been easy to do. I love how I see more details the longer I look- the shading on the cloth symbol, the golden hawk on the gauntlets, the small dents in her armour, the filigrees.
This is a gorgeous portrait for your character- personality, details, and a lovely perspective! Great job!

Awww! [Here's where I need a melting emote!]
I think I'm just in love with how you see things. It is always a relief to put effort into a picture and have those details noticed, because a lot of people don't take that time and a lot of those things are what make a picture go from taking a few hours to taking a few days. Like your characters, she's one that has meant a lot to me for a very long time, so I seriously appreciate your saying these things!
Just had to share with you, because I caught the Kiriban of someone I'm watching who is into the same game this armor is from, [link] -- she did an absolutely astonishing job! I've just seen it and I have to keep looking back at it because it amazes me so much.

go get Mr--Jack's brush pack. it's just three or four simple brushes. learn to use the square brush he's got, it will help you get over this soft, fuzzy edge business.
you'll find his brush pack somewhere in one of his gallery folders(me being lazy).

I've made brushes that do that swirly thing before, but could never quite figure out the controls, as they seemed sporatic. (It would make sense if it had something to do with pen tilt, but my tablet doesn't seem to want to register such things correctly.)
Thanks again for all of your help!

Thank you! I was sort of going for that (with the subdued light.) She's pale, but I didn't want her to look "completely" washed out. So, sort of a sunset glow, but not a particularly "red" sunset." Light can be so tricky sometimes.

Lovely art! Love the hair, look-wise. I always make my fem!warriors have short hair, because I start thinking about practicality, and hair fitting under a helm, or giving an enemy something to grab onto if you lose your helm- probably overthinking it, anyway, hehe. But it looks wonderful.
No one can resist Anders! Muahaha! But honestly I agree- he was the first character I romanced, and it made the game as a whole so much more touching, polarising, emotionally gripping for me. I felt invested in it, I guess. I've romanced the others in subsequent playthroughs, but he will be for me the "true" LI of the game.

Chrishankhah In reply to katiebour [2011-07-21 08:02:49 +0000 UTC]
My personal definition of short hair is anything above the shoulders, leaving me with no choice in DA2!
Ideally, Chrish would have her hair braided (or french braded) and pinned up or tucked inside the armor, but that's not how I like drawing her. *grin* I agree that shorter hair is more practical in battle, and I believe that's one of the reasons a lot of men and women in the military have incredibly short hair.
From a game designer standpoint, long hair clips with armor and other things. That's why we can't REALLY have long hair. hehe
And, yeah -- Anders! I can't imagine I would have loved the game so much without him. (I would have still loved it, just not nearly as much. lol)

oh wow thats a huge difference o.O i can well imagine that that took patience i think the fact that you added much stronger contrast helped a TON, apart from textures. *jumps back and forth*about the making, i didnt quite get your explaination there *blond* did you like...add the armour onto an existing character? paused screen..? +_+ oh well guess it doesnt matter
hm..i dn't know much to say other that imo you are going the right way your colour has gotten a LOT clear which, imo, makes it soo much better. you still mostly work with colours and light effects rather than direkt textures but through the sharpness it just looks great; in particular those gloves, you see that shining part up there that..? that came out fantastic
and so is the remainder of the arm up the sleeve. and that hm..stitching? pattiern? w/e on the front skirtthingy part, that it changes with its colours and it has a sort of gow to it too, thats great aso
espiacally that slightly shining part within the darkness is a great effect since it gives it a bit of a silyness and...hach :3 i think by getting the boundaries of your painting-bits right you are doing the most of it all
regarding the actual texture within the brushes hm..i dont know. The belt and thecloth at the shoulders still seems a bit wushly but heey
still a fantastic progress
so curiouse what the next step will be ^o^
actually i should just watch you then ig et my updates..lol..sec

Chrishankhah In reply to Sevel [2011-07-11 20:46:06 +0000 UTC]
Lol, sorry about my awkward explanation. As well as for the one I'm probably about to make!
Everything is hand-drawn. But the armor design here belongs to Dragon Age 2. I paused my screen on the game and drew what I was looking at.
Normally, I have to get creative with shapes and things and constantly redraw a sketch. So much time will go into putting together the right composition for a picture (doing the sketch) that I won't have as much patience for the end result, the details. This time, I just drew what I saw, it kept things simple!
But since it's a simple picture composition-wise, and everything here is drawn from what I saw on the screen, I got to focus more on the technical aspect and the details. I didn't have to worry about whether I drew "this hand correctly" or "that eye in the right place" because I was drawing directly from a reference in front of me. It's sort of the difference between painting a landscape you're looking at and making up one in your head.
Don't get me wrong, I look at references for other things I draw, usually for poses if I can find them, but I still have to make modifications and add different clothing and armor and soforth. In this case, the only change I made was in lengthening her hair. It's good practice, though, which will help me in drawing un-referenced armor in the future.
I loved adding the shining bits. Shininess is becoming one of my favorite crutches as an artist *grin*
You're right, I didn't do much with the cloth (I didn't know what TO do, I didn't want it looking like canvas, I liked a silky appearance,) and the belts I think got missed. I was hoping to make them look like leather, but I must have forgotten completely. *durpface*
Some things I'll just have to get used to. I've already built up a sort of "my own style" thing going, which makes it subsequently harder to learn what other people do. I see people who make dramatic use of light and I envy that. They are sporadic with their color yet really make something eye-catching. I can only look and strive harder

oooh i see damn you are e pic with faces then +_+ wow XD
i understand the sketch trouble..i find it hard to come up with a good compesition too +.+...i dont know if it would help putting the picture aside for a while and starting the next or something..personally i dont usualy get back tot he first if i do that..but you *could* try..or practise yourself in more speed?XD hm..oh thats difficult that is you could always just do hardcore sketch training XD some rocktail fishing..and then going to that one website for anatomy practise and go wild?XD lol..
yeeh i noticed you love to play with lots of light XD its cool :3 imo light effects are the a. and o. :3 although its hard to not overdo it osmetimes XD hehe...
hehe for silkyness i can only recommend the dodge and burntool, espiacally with the extremes of light and shadow..my problem is that my clothes usualy tend to look TOO silky ;o; i always thought clothes are eassy but lately i just cant doo theeeheem ;o; leather is hm...easier, very firm in its shading and..dunno..could always use that one brush in err...wet brushes? or dry no i think its dry? that gives it a bit of a....thingy pattern
leatherly..err..you know +.+
hm...i feel like i barely improved at all within the last year or maybe even two years ... ;_; its pretty sad really ...lol...I feel its easy to copy something, but to actually redo it once the picture to copy from aint in view anymore, thats hard..like as you said, introducing it in your style. But yah, practise practise practise > never give up :3

I did spend what felt like an endless amount of time on her face. The whole reason for drawing it was because I particularly liked how that bit came out. I couldn't show it off with a screen shot, and so drawing it was the next best thing.
Putting pictures aside just isn't an option for me. If I put a picture aside, I won't get back to it--sometimes for years--if at all. Most of my art gets started and finished in the same session for that reason. ADHD can be an epic bummer sometimes.
I'm no stranger to dodge and burn, that's pretty much what I did here. I should have used the texture I used for the plate at the bottom on the leather straps, yeah.
Improvement comes with time, and it will sneak up on you. Personally I think you've improved a lot when I look through your gallery. Keep trying different things, and you'll see it soon enough
When I try something new, or I go ahead with a sketch I was never quite happy with, I often end up with a piece I sort of hate. I go with it anyway, and the next time I do a drawing, I've still learned from the last. This happens to me a lot.

I see that! it does look great
pff adhd is just an excuse not buying that. Besides, i don't go back to old paintings either and i dont have any of those syndroms officialy XD
hm..dodge burn is amazingly easy for quick shading, but imo if you want to do proper colouring it still needs to be done by brush since you have som uch more controll over effects =/
lol i don't know...my gallery spreads over a long stretch of years now i draw so little..XD oh well...
if i dislike a picture iw ill just get rid of it id ont usualy keep drawing then..i don't draw enough to work on pieces i dislike :s its more those paintings where i take a lot of time on when i really learn a lot too. Like i will look things up, compare with pictures and look at tutorials and such, and try out different things =/ but honestly? when is there time for that XD

I don't just say I have ADHD because I'm sporatic with art, you know! It's a very small part of a vast array of personality quirks that just happen to fit the description of the disorder down to a T. But I suppose that's just a coincidence
I do my highlights with brush and dodge both, just depends if dodge is doing what I want it to or not. Most of the pictures I dislike, personally, go to scraps -- unless i have a good reason to hide it outright.
I look up tutorials a little bit, sometimes. I generally don't get to the end of them, but there's bits and pieces to pick up and learn! I mostly just teach myself, I think. Most comfortable that way, lol

I wish I could have a hair mod, but I play Dragon Age on my brother's Xbox.
The character she's based on has always had long hair, so I drew her that way. In the game, I use a hair that is similar in style but much shorter (cut just above the shoulder.) Sort of like a cleopatra cut, I think.
I wish games DID let females have longer hair in general, but I understand there's problems with 3D meshing and clipping and that sort of thing.

Yeah, normally it shouldn't. I remember having the problem with Oblivion, though -- I made a character (after this same OC) and a lot of the armor just wasn't designed for it. It tends to limit their designers when they have to worry about other flowy-type objects, and so most girls get stuck with short hair.

Yes, especially with all of the cut scenes in the game. A lot of it requires such specific detail that it just wouldn't be possible to give great customization options. (Case in point, look at videos of the character replacement mod some people use. It can get sort of awkward!)
