The letters are genetic code from human DNA, the information that scientifically makes us human. Each set of three characters (A T C G) represents one amino acid, or base pair of DNA. The piece begins copying DNA base pairs at the beginning of Chromosome one, and continues in sequence through the entire work.

Bear Flag:
A subculture within the gay community, “Bears” are usually mature gay or bisexual men who exhibit a strong masculine appearance. It was created by men who felt mainstream gay culture was unwelcoming to those who did not fit a particular bodily norm (hairless, and young). Also, many gay men do not identify with the stereotypical urban gay lifestyle, and seek an alternative which more closely resembles the typical “blue collar” American male image.
