little test to Simulate a character based destruction like in the movie Blade
done in 3ds Max
simulated with Thinking Particles and FumeFx
rendering with Vray

Impressive. I wonder what it would take to do something like this in Blender.
I mean "like this" in a special way. I'd like to use smoke or flame effects from some graphic application to drive effects simulating windblown hair or fabric....

You can do something like that in blender for sure maybe not that dynamic but you can precut everything i 2 or 3 levels of peace sizes and than simulate the collapse with bullet.
Make sure you give every breaking face a spezial id so you can emit particles from them for the further burning process.
Than you animate the timing of the fire emission texture to get the burning right.
At the end its not the Program how do the trick its the level of skill with the help of Hardware and time.
