Description Part of a continuing series on creature creation! πŸ”₯TIPS & TRICKSπŸ”₯ for aspiring artists and designers!Β
This week I'm doing something a little different by using only two creatures 🐺🐠instead of the typical three (I typically recommend three MINIMUM). These two particular organisms are also particularly challenging because they don't share a lot of complimentary features. It's difficult to combine extremely distinct animals smoothly without creating a chimera (basically just mixed but identifiable features of multiple creatures mashed together). A wolf body with just a fish head (or vice versa) is basically the worst case scenario, but it's also a difficult problem to avoid when you're only drawing from two animal references.
To compensate for this I integrated the angler fish's luminous head lure into the wolf's tail. This helps the design remain balanced. If all your features from one animal are concentrated in a single spot (like the face), it can weaken your work. I kept the basic body plan of the wolf (quadrupedal predator) and added the slimy, scale-less skin of the angler over the scaffold of a large mammal.Β
You don't need to combine your creatures exactly 50% across every feature (coloration, body type, size, etc.) you can choose your favorite aspects of a creature and combine them disproportionately to generate a unique personal vision!Β
That's all I've got for now! Leave a couple (2-4) animals in the comments that you think would make a good combo! If I like the suggestion I'll make a creature outta them!Β

wowzers.. do you still do these creature combinations? Ouo

Β for some reason, Mexican Mole Lizard, King Crab, and an Anglerfish seem like an interesting combination xD

Though their bioluminesence is typically to fascinate and disorient prey. Some packs have learned how to use this ability to trick unwary humans into approaching them, pretending to be a person with a light source, only for the rest of the pack to ambush the victim.
The better known members of the species are the females.
The males are born small and degenerate, latching on to their mates abdomens while mating, then permanently fusing to them as an awkward growth. Mated females grow larger as a result and go on to lead packs of their own unmated daughters and siblings.

It looks like a quadrupedal xenomorph.

Have you thought about adding a machine to the mix to get some kind ofΒ biomechanical creature?

Awesome artwork. I honestly thought this was a xenomoeph/fish hybrid at first.

I could easily see this as some sort of pack-hunting beast in a fantasy setting, each one circling around the chosen target and using the glow on its tail to confuse and disorient prey at night.

Another creature design I can see as a Kaiju in Pacific Rim. The tail could be similar to Leatherbacks EMP Organ in that it naturally charges and generates electromagnetic energy which can disrupt and overload a Jaegers electronic sensors and visual equipment for short periods of time, allowing the creature to rip and tear at the Jaeger with its teeth and claws. Overall a very cool design
