Description
"Oh, it's still light out. Isn't there time for just one more chapter?"Books and dragons.
This is the second piece of fanart I was working on. I actually finished it last night, just before the contest deadline.
I did have to rush it a bit to finish on time, though. Normally I spend much longer on these sorts of pictures. This certainly wasn't a speedpaint, but it was a quicker piece. I might have to go back over it again and refine the scale texture a bit more sometime.
Comments and criticism are always welcome.
Edit: Improved the eye, and right front paw slightly.
Major edit: Changed the coloring. I think this color scheme looks quite a bit better on this picture. I've fixed several small errors, improved the lighting, and put a bit more coloring on Temeraire's pendant. Overall, I'm much happier with this piece now, even if the lines are still rather thick.

Thank you.
This picture, and my last one are both fanart pieces for Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. [link]
There are many scenes like this in the three books I read.
I was looking for a new series to read, and stumbled across this one. It's been a lot of fun so far.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy it.
I'm still working in grayscale before coloring. I think it makes lighting much easier to handle.

Right away I noticed that this was a little different from your usual work. The black outline is much thicker! The style is good for more or a abstract-cartoony type of art and it's perfect if that's what you were aiming for. However, if you were trying to make this look more realistic, then I'm afraid to say that the outline messed you up a bit.
I'm happy to say that you're improving on your humans, the detail is great and it's fun to look at.
Well, that's my critique! I hope it was fair/helpful and un-annoying.

It was helpful. Thank you for the awesome comment!
I accidentally scaled it down when I was working on it. I noticed my mistake when I saw the thick outlines, even though I was using the same brush size I normally do. It was sort of on a deadline for that contest, too, so I didn't have time to go back over and fix that, so it was a rather frustrating picture to work on.
But, I'm planning on using much thinner lines on my next few. I'm going to use that method again where I sketch with shapes, and not draw the outline first. It seems to be a much more natural approach, and I think practicing that a bit more will be rather beneficial.

Whew, I'm glad my critique was of use to you. Sorry about the brush sizes, that's too bad. But your art always looks gorgeous!
By the way, did you get the results from the contest yet? I hope you do/did well.

Haha oh man I would have used that for a statue to read on!
I always had a weak spot for dragons with mustaches, gives them that slight sense of dignity! The collar matches with the colour of the dragon so much, it almost looks like as if it's a part of him Grouped colours looking sweet here too, the little touches of purple are great highlighters

Thank you.
The first color scheme I tried wasn't as organized, and the picture started looking rather rainbow-ish. I toned the colors down a bit, and used some of the same coloring on the dragon and on the collar, and now it looks much more organized. I'm glad to hear that it turned out well.

Oh yeah, I've heard of a couple of artists saying they struggle trying to avoid a rainbow-vomit look
You're welcome!

Other than that slight adjustment to the eye that mentioned, I don't see a thing in the world wrong with this. Quite frankly, it's magnificent!!

I guess dragons are very literary creatures. It seems like the two go together but I just don't know why it just seems so cool. Wow and this dragon is huuuge!!! XD Nicely done Chromamancer.

Ah, it's actually open. I was intending that to be like an index finger.
The motion is supposed to be like when you see someone tapping their finger on their desk. I see a few problems with that part of the picture now, so I'll probably go back and fix some of those in the morning.
Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I want to so I love the style you've used for this pic-The shadows play a big part in this and you nailed them. Personally I would tilt the eye of your dragon forward so as to either focus on the book or on the human since it seems he's looking offwards. Again very nice work my friend!

That's an excellent point. I'll make sure to fix that with a slight adjustment in the morning.
I'm noticing all sorts of small mistakes that I didn't see before I uploaded it. I'll fix them, though. Just because it's uploaded doesn't mean that I can't change it later.
Thanks again for pointing that out. I'll make sure to look out for that in the future.
