"Oh, it's still light out. Isn't there time for just one more chapter?"Books and dragons.
I've used those in plenty of art before, and it is a theme that I enjoy, so I found Temeraire's love of books quite entertaining.This is the second piece of fanart I was working on. I actually finished it last night, just before the contest deadline.
I did have to rush it a bit to finish on time, though. Normally I spend much longer on these sorts of pictures. This certainly wasn't a speedpaint, but it was a quicker piece. I might have to go back over it again and refine the scale texture a bit more sometime.
Comments and criticism are always welcome.
Edit: Improved the eye, and right front paw slightly.
Major edit: Changed the coloring. I think this color scheme looks quite a bit better on this picture. I've fixed several small errors, improved the lighting, and put a bit more coloring on Temeraire's pendant. Overall, I'm much happier with this piece now, even if the lines are still rather thick.

I didn't spend as much time on this one, as some of my other pictures, but I used some different methods than what I do while doing a speedpaint, so some of the technical details are kind of caught in that awkward middle ground.
Anyway, It's been rather difficult for me to get a good feel for Temeraire's size from the books. I have only read the first three, though. The appendix at the end of the first estimates around 40 Tons. From what I've seen around a generous estimate of the weight of a T-Rex is around 8 Tons, to put that in perspective a bit. He also carried staggering numbers of people when outfitted with the Chinese inspired harness. There are many things to indicate that he is much larger than most fantasy dragons, so I didn't want to make him too small.
You are entirely correct about the wings. That's a rather major detail that I overlooked, there.
I didn't remember that the spines of his ruff couldn't form over the spine, either. I'll have to go re-read a few of those descriptions of him, I guess.
After doing a little more research, I just uploaded a minor edit, changing the pupils on his eyes slightly, but some of the issues are not quite as easily addressed.
I thought the pose would be a good one to show a bit of interest in the book, and remove a bit of the threatening appearance, but maybe it could have been done more effectively.
What do you think the best way to show his intellectual side in this situation would be?

First, his eyebrows are angled down too much, soften those. soften the look in his eyes too. Well... that actually would depend on what kind of book Laurence is reading.
Second, Tem's teeth are showing too much; if he IS talking, then raise his mouth corners into a smile, and hide his upper teeth a bit more. If you can push his whiskers back, that's where the would normally be. oh and make it look like Tem does NOT have scales around the nose and mouth.
finally lower his neck to be almost even with his shoulders, otherwise he looks a bit tense.
that's about it, I can't see anything else. If you don't have all of the books, you can get them at B&N for about 8 bucks a pop, except for the new hardback which is liek 25. I have all of them, so if yer going to do a new one just ask.
I'm just asking: do you know that Tem has 5 digits (hands/feet)? That's pretty important. Just read the first book it should be in there. I cannot tell if he has 4 or 5 in this paint.

Minor nitpick. Laurence has never worn a red uniform. He's only ever worn Navy blue and Air Corps green. Red is for the Army and Marines.Β

I particularly love Temmy's pose and the details on his face and eyes. Too bad there weren't voice recorders during the Napoleonic era or else Lawrence would bless the creator of the device
