Description Started out as something to work on between my calendar art because even I get bored of just drawing scenery over and over again. So I have been working on and off this for the past couple of weeks so I'm surprised that I'm actually content with what the final result came out like. Not totally as I envisioned but close enough and I've spent enough time on it.

Just a long-haired bishie and a lot of pretty purple stuff, mainly the girls will only like it but I'm sure some guys will too drawn in Photoshop alone, no 3D or photo-manips used, as usual in my character art. My reference was a Ball-Jointed Doll here [link] I'm glad those things are so popular, I'm finding them good reference models and inspire me to make pretty characters...it's win-win

Also my first semi-realism attempt I feel might be good enough for a print, so why not - it's costing me nothing

All artwork in my gallery remains my own copyrighted work and is not to be re-submitted, edited or not on any other account or site without my permission

How do you do this? 0-0 Your work is amazing.. people say practice, practice, practice.. You just have talent.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to AshNee-chan [2009-12-03 07:56:13 +0000 UTC]

I guess the most realistic answer is a bit of both the fact is that some artist really are more "naturally talented" than others...sounds harsh in a way but I also have to face that too...I know of plenty of artists who spend less time practicing than I do but they improve much more faster...on the other hand some simply can't grasp it as easily, I ike to think I'm somewhere in the upper-middle at least

But practice counts. Someone may have potential talent but they need to learn how to use it, I'm sure famous artists, singers and dancers didn't become professional the day they discovered their hobby

OMG...PURPLE!!

*Ahem* Now that that's over.

This is really amazing!
I love the in-depth shading in the skin and all the detail in the hair. The different highlights and lowlights add so much volume. The clothes are lovely. You must have had so mad patience to draw all that. The silk texture come out perfectly. The flowers look fluffy. Yes, fluffy. They're also really cute too.

The only thing you should have added that was in the ref, is the dark, cold glare. The man in your drawing looks a bit lost.
Other than that, I am simply blown away by your work!

Thanks a lot Oh yeah, long hair is hard enough to draw as is, doing it in an unnatural colour is even harder...lucky I never go fo full-on realism The clothes took even longer than you would expect but luckily it was a rather repetitive process that I got the hang of eventually

Yeah, he looks a bit lost, an alternative title was "Absent minded" that's the one downside to using Ball-Jointed Dolls as a reference, they're beautiful but often expressionless

That was my intended mood, just something soft and calming (which is rare in any male art ) the title actually means just that

Yeah, I figured as much. It's a really pretty name. It's like "emotion" and "gentle" all in one!

And yes, it is rare! But that just makes this piece twice as special!

Chromattix In reply to Abyss-Valkyrie [2009-11-19 05:42:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, the clothes and hair took the longest time for obvious reasons Colouring I have always been confident with since to me it's the most interesting part of artmaking (some simply prefer drawing or shading better and so they focus on that) knowing the differnet blending modes and what colours to use always helps, there's no set rule though since each drawing will always need a unique colouring and lighting situation

Not only the brilliant landscapes and astral world arts, but you are totally amazing even in the, i dare to say, most difficult of them all!! You really are gifted!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to ltdalius [2009-11-10 05:50:41 +0000 UTC]

Finally, someone who understands these are the hardest to draw ...I think people in general are the hardest thing to draw, people have high expectations of anotomical accuracy in human characters and figures since we see real people every day to compare them to, minor flaws that are forgivable in landscape art are often blatantly obvious in portraits I still enjoy making scenery more but try to keep myself sharp in these too

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ltdalius In reply to Chromattix [2009-11-11 21:26:22 +0000 UTC]

Hehe - i know that according to myself Heh... I'm not too much of an artist, but the characters, no matter if they are human or fantasy, are something that is still way out of 'my reach'
- Yes, you're probably right about the people - even for fantasy or alien creatures some flaws aren't important or people just neglect them as they can't compare it to some hard reference, but for the regular human chars comparison is the keyword. Good for you that with art like this you really don't have to be afraid, at least that's my humble opinion

While the technical skill and the detail put into this is ASTOUNDING (I wanna be as gewd ) there’s something off about his face :/ it doesn’t seem quite… right.

On second thoughts it’s probably the uncanny valley playing up - the closer something gets to perfection the more obvious are any mistakes.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to nnaj [2009-11-09 12:53:27 +0000 UTC]

I spent so many years only being concerned about realistic colour and shading that until recently - I totally neglected anatomy and proportions in favour of it (what can I say - I'm not good enough to tackle all aspects of art at once ) I wasn't too happy with the face either but after hours of work I gave up

The second bit was an interesting observation too

Just stay motivated, I felt the same about other artists and that wa sthe only thing that made me improve after years of being pretty much the same (especially in manga, the ones I did a few years ago aren't even as nice as yours actually, many were deleted from my gallery long ago )

Glad you liked the others too, I suppose they're better since I've been doing space and scenery way longer than characters

Seeing artists like you make me even more motivated to improve, since your level and skill... I can see what you did.
I can understand possible techniques that you use, and see how colors blend for an effect.
I just...
My fingers are not well-trained yet, nor is my patience very long. ^_^;

Thank you for the encouragement, though.
It makes me happy when people really reply, instead of just saying "Thanks!" and leaving it at that.

Thankyou, I havn't spent this much time on hair since my last Drawing of Sephiroth a year ago where I had to do it by mouse I love purple and wanted to make a character soley in that (though I prefer the richer more magenta-like shades, but this looked better in more subdued and lighter purple )

Hitori--sama In reply to Chromattix [2009-11-07 05:22:05 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome, I love his hair. I do all my pictures by mouse and I hate it, but I'm getting a scanner soon so I won't have to white it all out and stuff ^^
My room is black and purple because those are two of my favorite colors, but it looks kind of weird. (I actually had purple hair once, I may put up a pic.)
I'm not the greatest at coloring, I mainly focus my efforts on manga pages. I love it when a picture mainly consist of one color in different shades, so you using mostly purples is right up my alley ^_^

Chromattix In reply to zerdron [2009-10-27 05:32:35 +0000 UTC]

Sort-of, I painted the individual patterns flat on seperate layers that way, and kept duplicating the layer and warping it to fit the contours of the clothing (which I had shaded already so I can see what sticks out and what goes in) and used a few layers in a few different blending modes and opacities to make it look like they were part of the material and not just stuck on top it did take a few hours but I found it worked well
