Description
The Legendary Ladder is a renowned structure built by a race of aliens to take advantage of their close proximity to a neighbouring and tidally-locked fertile moon. The Legendary Ladder serves as a colossal elevator between both worlds complete with a stop-off station at the near-halfway point where the gravity of both worlds is in tie with each other. It is used for both practical and leisure purposes and is the central hub of huge cities at both endsMy sole entry to TheLuminarium 's 10th online exhibit and the last "themed" one to my knowledge, given the theme Legendary. As most think of the past when they think of Legends, I deliberately went the other way and thought towards the future.
Creating buildings and spaceships often feels like such a chore to me, regardless of whether I do them in 2D or 3D (much of it was 3D though) I have no idea how other space artists handle them so well
Made using Cinema 4D, Vue 7 and Photoshop, oh, I'm aware the copyright says it was made a few months earlier than the submission date...that's because it was and I had to hold it for a while.
Edit: Wooo! the first time one of my sci-fi themed deviations gets a DD, it is after all one of my favourite things to do! Thanks a lot to *hoevelkamp and ^taenaron , both quality sci-fi/space artists in themselves

gods, this is awesome! Those details and the whole scene makes me stare at the pic over and over again. I wish I could fly with such a ship there to see it for real.

You'll need a prestigious license to drive one of those ships...they're two dollars a pop from the nearest vending machine
Glad you liked the details, even in 3D man they can take forever to get right, but practically all glowing lights were drawn afterwards onto a previously dark city

I think so too. But I would hitchhiking, maybe I get a free ride then.

Kind of like a funky extra space elevator. You always have some of the best ideas.
You know, this would look sublime as a wallpaper...

Chromattix In reply to MoonlitCrescent [2010-05-17 13:30:06 +0000 UTC]
That's pretty much exactly what it is
There's no way this could work in wallpaper format, too much of anything that matters would have to be cropped out on one end or another my first drafts were actually horizontal but it just didn't work for the idea in mind.

MoonlitCrescent In reply to Chromattix [2010-05-17 13:34:37 +0000 UTC]
Uh huh, though it can't possibly connect at both ends? No way they could do that even if the planet and moon were in perfect aligned orbit... and you mean the idea, yeah?
Oh? Even if it's horizontal I'd still very happily use it. I doubt much cropping would be needed at all.

Aww man, you always ask at the times I'm most tired first see if the one on the Luminarium itself is big enough...even if it has to be rotated (I guess there's no up or down in space)
Yeah, they're connected, they would likely be in segments that allow it to change length or even bend with the subtle changes in distances between two worlds

MoonlitCrescent In reply to Chromattix [2010-05-17 14:00:58 +0000 UTC]
Well obviously you don't have to do it right now. I'll check it, but I don't quite think it is... hang on... no it's not, though it give a couple of fascinating perspective changes when rotated, especially upside down. I guess I'll need it to scale with a height or width of 1200.
Even more curious, though it reality I suspect they'd build it close as they reasonably can so it's on;y a very short ferry ride to the other side, and there's few problems that way. Well, unless you consider building the thing to be a problem
Love it still.

Indeed it is, though I enjoy it I tend to inadvertently find the "flaws" that involve the fiction part
No problem mate.

truly amazing! the amount of detail is stunning and besides, orbital elevators r badass.
My only problem with this pic is the prospective. The position of the opposite end of the ladder is squished all the way at the top of the pic and is quite tiny leading one to think at first that the ladder is just a really large tower rather than a connecting structure. perhaps extending the top of the frame so we could see more of the other planet will correct this illusion
but other than that its an excellent piece.

Chromattix In reply to shiro522 [2010-05-17 13:24:16 +0000 UTC]
True a taller format would allow for mor eof the tower to be seen, but remember - these planets are big and very far apart, the other end would realistically barely be visible, on the full-sized image it's much easier to see in high resolution, it may not look like it here, but rest assured - it connects

mindfleas In reply to ??? [2010-05-17 12:29:26 +0000 UTC]
hmm, that would need some pretty perfect orbits for the planet's inhabitants to have the opportunity to build something like that... seems like it could be broken so easily
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to mindfleas [2010-05-17 12:41:30 +0000 UTC]
I do like it when people question that, it shows they know something about astrophysics But I mentioned tidally locked, the planets always face the same side sof each other as they go around, like an endless staring competition, one though would consider the subtle changes in orbit-distance too - so I guess you need to use your imagination, the elevator could be in segments that allow for expansion/retraction and bending
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
mindfleas In reply to Chromattix [2010-05-17 15:19:42 +0000 UTC]
yeah i know you mentioned they were locked, i just meant the conditions for them to have the opportunity to build something like that would be insanely rare, for the circumstances to be so perfect... if the planets became even slightly out of synch, the whole thing would be ripped apart
i had considered that it would probably need some kind of flexibility, probably using technology similar to those "earthquake proof" buildings, or having the central connecting section being free-floating in some way, maybe only connected to one side of the ladder at a time or something
even then it would be a risky business though, the thousands of miles of ladder would probably be holding a whole lot of people at the time of any accident... if anything went wrong it'd be expensive, to say the least

You know, Sir Arthur Clarke actually had a similar idea (that was for reaching Earth's orbit though). I don't know if he ever wrote it in one of his numerous books, but the thought has always fascinated me.

Cool, I've never heard of that, only a hypothetical space-elevator that even I'm not expecting to see within the next 20 years it's indeed a cool concept, though w ehave much further to have to build than these guys apprently do
