Description The Legendary Ladder is a renowned structure built by a race of aliens to take advantage of their close proximity to a neighbouring and tidally-locked fertile moon. The Legendary Ladder serves as a colossal elevator between both worlds complete with a stop-off station at the near-halfway point where the gravity of both worlds is in tie with each other. It is used for both practical and leisure purposes and is the central hub of huge cities at both ends

My sole entry to TheLuminarium 's 10th online exhibit and the last "themed" one to my knowledge, given the theme Legendary. As most think of the past when they think of Legends, I deliberately went the other way and thought towards the future.
Creating buildings and spaceships often feels like such a chore to me, regardless of whether I do them in 2D or 3D (much of it was 3D though) I have no idea how other space artists handle them so well so this is a little unusual for me. Was hard trying to get a good composition and angle too, even now - I had to "fake" the perspective to an almost fisheye-like view to be able to get the whole structure in view to appreciate its length, which almost disappears into a hairline on the other end

Made using Cinema 4D, Vue 7 and Photoshop, oh, I'm aware the copyright says it was made a few months earlier than the submission date...that's because it was and I had to hold it for a while.

Edit: Wooo! the first time one of my sci-fi themed deviations gets a DD, it is after all one of my favourite things to do! Thanks a lot to *hoevelkamp and ^taenaron , both quality sci-fi/space artists in themselves

This is actually amazing. It would be suitable as a cover of a Philip Dick's novel or something. Thank you for tingling my sci-fi senses. ^^

One of the your more interesting images (in my opinion) due to well developed back story.

The place where the gravity of both bodies cancel out isn't necessarily a stable region.

A planet and moon are a rotating system, so there is a third factor: the so called centrifugal force. The outward push you feel when on a merry-go-round.

The point between two bodies where the two gravities and centrifugal force all cancel out is called the L1 region.

It is quite possible for a planet and a moon to be tide locked to one another, that is they always present each other the same face. In such a system, a space elevator linking the two bodies would be possible and L1 would indeed be a strategic location.

The setting of the Rocheworld series by Robert Forward is a pair of tide locked planets sharing the same atmosphere. I believe Pluto and Charon are tidelocked with one another.

Great image and concept!

Hmm, now that you mention it, I do remember seeing "L1" in a diagram before, but I didn't get the explaination at the time (even I don't know everything lol ) but it's cool to know its at leats possible, if one wants to get really deep into it there would be ways for the stop-off midway to slide up or down if that perfect zone shifts I think the merry-go-round might be a little slow to feel any noticable centrifugal force, especially if little kids can hold on but my favourite example is thos eother rides that look like a giant washing machine, you literally "stick" to the rapidly spinning walls (what a headache I got, it felt like the blood was only in the back of my head lol )

Interesting how that story featured planets sharing the same atmosphere, I've thought about that - only with gas giants (someone said there was an episode of Star Trek or something with that in it )

Iam trying to figure how ppl inside the elevator will feel when the gravity changes inside the elevator from floor to the roof in the midle of the trip xD

Very nice artwork you have here, Congrats

Chromattix In reply to URIZHEY [2010-05-18 00:37:39 +0000 UTC]

The change would be gradual I think, but yeah - you'll be left feeling kinda woozy unless there was some rotation to create a "simulated" gravity inside...guess we'll never know

Nice, I love the detail in the city at the bottom, it must've taken a while... A really great picture.
It reminds me of this "look and read" film I studied in english when I was about 8, "The legend of the lost keys", where two worlds are linked... somehow. I can't remember how The video scared the shit out of me though.
But the detail in this picture, in the cities, spaceships and the terrain is pretty incredible, and I am wondering quite how powerful your computer must be, mine would have disintegrated into a pile of plastic!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to TheSquareBrick [2010-05-18 00:33:50 +0000 UTC]

Indeed it did take a long time lol, that sounds like a pretty complex movie for a kid to do a case study on, t come to think of it - I can't ever remember watching TV in class until high school

Yeah, I needed a computer with 4GB of RAM like I have to do this, before on my previous computer it would not have been possible

TheSquareBrick In reply to Chromattix [2010-05-18 15:15:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, it was worth it! I can't really remember much about it to be honest, can't remember what work or anything we did on it.
Our computer has 3GB RAM, but I don't really need much of it... and my laptop has about 0.5GB

You did well with going to the future instead of the past. I also like the perspective, which I think the way you built the buildings in a curved manner greatly created that nice ffect.

Great job

Chromattix In reply to BOONJAGGA [2010-05-18 00:00:58 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou, I guessthe past dosn't interest me as much as the future, past is too limiting the buildings were actually built straight, but the camera-view in the 3D world I made had settings that kinda bend the view of it, like a fisheye lens
