Description You CAN use 2D images as something more than just a "backdrop" in a 3D render. It takes a fair amount of postwork in your image editor, as well as some preparation during rendering. This tutorial covers one aspect of using stock in 3D: "cutting and pasting" to integrate the 3D material with the 2D image, specifically moving parts of the 2D image into the foreground in front of the 3D part.

I assume you are at least somewhat familiar with both a 3D tool such as Poser, and an image editor such as Photoshop.

The ladies were even less fully dressed, but "mature content" would be very unhelpful in a tutorial.)

interesting tut but with some real effort could havebeen refined and also the 3d objects should be lit and rendered to fit the scene even tweekin it more in photo shop would have helped....... maybe even adding some atmosphere with an elips or texture so it seems like one image might help too...

Thanks - it's not called "Part 1" for nothing!

It's probably off by a few degrees. Bright sunlight would have made it easier to figure out the direction (as well as making it necessary).

Lighting is way too big an issue to cover in the same tutorial as cutting and pasting. ( [link] [link] [link] ) The example I chose here is outdoors with very diffuse light, specifically to keep the lighting issues simple. Even so, the lights in this image needed some discussion later on.

It's a nice tutorial, might have even taught this old dog a new trick.

Glad about that!

Over the years I've acquired a good collection of scenery props, so I don't need to use stock as much as I used to - but I still enjoy the very different skill set involved in using stock as scenery. And sometimes even now, the right 3D prop just doesn't exist! - and a stock photo out there is just the right thing.

I've considered posting some of my techniques as tutorials, like how I split my renders into multiple jobs. Most of my renders are the characters and background/foreground objects all done separately, then sandwiched in PS.

Thanks, Kat - also for the !

Of course photomanipulators do this kind of thing all the time, but I suspect it is pretty unfamiliar to 3D artists. I look forward to others actually trying it

Thanks, Eve!

Now you know some of it (couldn't fit everything in without making it unreadable, and taking forever to finish) - I'm curious whether you will try it...

angeliquemroczka In reply to Chronophontes [2009-06-08 12:54:15 +0000 UTC]

I will probably give it a shot. Getting tired of using the same backgrounds over and over.

Just to figure out what I want to do...

Chronophontes In reply to angeliquemroczka [2009-06-08 13:04:07 +0000 UTC]

I often get ideas from stock images themselves, either browsing or from new posts by the various stockers on my watch list.

(One or more of my muses will butt in with "I want to be in THAT scene!")

That's cool.

Any recommended ones that I can stalk, er ... watch?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chronophontes In reply to angeliquemroczka [2009-06-09 22:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Sure!

I have a substantial list of stalkers, um, stockers, whose work I've used - in two different ways. This is just a list of the most important ones.

Some of them I use mainly for backgrounds (and sometimes partial foregrounds!):

*Peace-of-Art , ~mysticmorning , ~Camaryn-Wallpaper , *ro-stock , ~restmlinstock , *quaddles , ~stocklove , *Aegean-Prince , =Flore-stock , *almudena-stock , ~night-fate-stock , ~tia-stock , ~Enchantedgal-Stock , ~HerrVorragend

And these are collectors of vintage photos that I use as reference for poses and miscellaneous details:

~Menschenmaterial , ~M3ment0M0ri and ~MementoMori-stock , ~GentlemansClubStock , =inspyretash-stock , ~vintage-visions

Chronophontes In reply to Andi-3d [2009-06-06 12:50:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'm a teacher, so I should be able to present the content reasonably well. The hard part, other than making it look good, is to know my audience and choose an appropriate level. (My students often complain that I talk over their heads, as hard as I try not to. A minority of them complain that I make it too easy!)

I've thinking a tutorial on .cr2 modify, how to use an head on another body, and thing like this, can be really usefull.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chronophontes In reply to Lord-Crios [2009-06-08 12:18:27 +0000 UTC]

Do you think that you would write this, or should I?

My technique for combining heads and bodies is not very good. I know there is a better way, but it would be very complex and difficult. I'm not sure if it would be worthwhile to write a tutorial on the way I do it, but I will try.
