Haha! Well, that might be a factor along with the chemical changes. Her life-force, being metabolically slowed down almost to nothing by the cocoon-symbiosis, is deriving the little sustenance it needs from the tree somehow, through her skin, so in theory she could live without breathing, since maybe her heart is only beating once every five minutes. But you know, if you take this kind of sci-fi thing too literally you go down a rabbit hole. I think the phrase is "suspension of disbelief"...
