Description This piece is OOOOOOOOOOLD... I did this waaay back when 'Metal Gear Solid' came up for the first PlayStation... ok, now I feel like an old bastard!!! ...in my defense, I was about 19 when I originally drew it... I had only penciled the original piece with inks by Mr. Mark Irwin, and I think it was used for 'Game Pro' or one of those magazines that has since gone out of business... anyway, YEARS later, I found it in an old portfolio and decided to add ink-washes just for sh#ts and giggles... I also added the color and 'laser glow' in Photoshop just for the hell of it... and well, here it is after finding it in some old back-up disc once again!

why cant artist just get paid doing what they love with out a degree so sad

actually, to be honest, most artist I know who are 'Pros' don't have a degree.... the good thing about being an artist is that your portfolio is much more important than a degree.... schooling is good because it teaches you things that would be much harder or slower to learn on your own, but the education is much more important than a degree in an artist's case!

... it really depends on what you want to do... if you want to work for say: DC or Marvel, then you have to submit your work to their editors so they can check it out (either at Conventions or through the internet), then it's really up to them to decide if they like your work enough to hire you for one of their titles... the other way, you can always self publish or find 'small press' publishers that would be willing to publish your work... it's tougher this way because you have to eat the cost of the printing before you see any profits, BUT the plus is that you don't have to wait for the editors of the 'Big companies" to contact you... I hope the info helps!

At wich age? Im 18, just bought my wacom, hoping to it don't take so long to be a pro...

I was 18 or 19 when I 'broke in', BUT honestly, don't worry too much about it.... some AMAZING artist broke in much later (some mid to late 20's), AND I got my far share of rejection from editors up to the time I finally broke in, SO if your serious about it, be STUBBORN as all hell and keep it up!

I wanted to see what it looked like before your touch up (I was finding it hard to belive someone could be so good at 19) and I found it [link] and holy shit.. you've litterally added nothing now that it's uploaded... you really were that good at 19...

Absolutely amazing - I'm 17 now and I can't even imagine being this good in two years...

Great stuff as always.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Chuckdee In reply to SamGreenArt [2011-05-20 01:06:07 +0000 UTC]

the ink-washes were added YEARS later though.... originally, it was a black and white drawing with no grays... those I did much much later.

...and don't sweat your age Dude... if I showed you drawings from when I was 17 there was quite a big difference.... if you are stubborn and work hard, a couple of years can make a HUGE difference in improvement.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SamGreenArt In reply to Chuckdee [2011-06-01 21:45:27 +0000 UTC]

Well that puts my mind at ease a little bit

I know no one can really give a difinitive answer but would you say I'm on track for my age? This is something I drew a few months back (I was still 16 at the time) but only coloured yesterday: [link]
and this is a more recent one from a couple weeks ago [link]

What do you think? I practice quite a bit but seeing how good this is at only 19 (even without the ink washes) is a bit worrying...

Anyway, thanks for the reply!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Chuckdee In reply to SamGreenArt [2011-06-02 00:06:02 +0000 UTC]

really Dude, don't sweat your age... if you were 50 I'd worry, but you are doing fine.... I don't think age matters as much as the willingness to learn... u can be 15, AND already think you're a badass who doesn't need to learn anything (met some of those)... so it all really boils down to how 'open' you are to learning, AND also how much 'practice time' you're willing to put in... you'd be amazed how much you can improve in one year if you really commit to it.
