Yes thats true, its is a colony of different coral species all hold together in a gelantinous shell. There are also task differences between the different corals. The ones in the "head" region are there for chemotaxis and simple dark and light determination. Most parts are there for feeding and can be ex- and retracted into the shell. In danger the shell produces a slime which has a bad taste for predators.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Strange but also rather believable. Best fictional monsters and creatures are the ones that seem like they might actually exist.
