Savage Spell Part 1

“People imagine a predatory animal to be one of those blood thirsty creatures you usually see on National Geographic or one of those other nature shows…I’ve got a slightly different perspective on it…

Yep, that’s me the introverted and curious girl trying to experiment with sorcery. Interestingly I’d usually scoff at the idea of magic or witchcraft. I guess it was the fear of being away from home for the first time or the boredom of waiting for my first semester of college to start. As it happens I never pass up the opportunity to try something for my self and see if there is in fact any truth to it. That morning I came across a peculiar book in a yard sale, something about it caught my eye. An older man about sixty or so approached me as I was looking at it. “Can I help you miss?” “Uh, well actually yeah how much is this book?” He looked slightly perplexed by my question. “Well…that there book is free miss.” Something was up why would this guy be giving away his stuff. “You’re joking right?” “Nope, that there book has caused me nothing but trouble.” Looking at it I noticed the pentagrams and some strange scribbles on it. The book it self must have been well over 70 years old. “Trouble…is this a book on witchcraft or something?” “I suppose so if you want to call it that. My brother brought it back with him from India during WWII. Ever since then terrible things have been happening, he went missing not too long ago.”

Is this guy for real? He seriously thinks I’m going to fall for that superstitious crap. “Wow sounds pretty serious…you said this books from India?” “Yea must be over one hundred years old, though my brother claimed it to be at least almost 1,000.” “A thousand years old and your willing to part with it for free?” “Yep but I don’t see why anybody would want it after all that’s happened.” This thing could be a fake but if not it was clearly really valuable. “Tell ya what I’ll take it off your hands and see if there’s anything to this ancient curse, who knows maybe your brother wrote some clues in it.” The older man looked worried almost hesitant to even allow me to hold the book. “I guess there’s no convincing you is there?” He asked as he watched me thumb through the book. “Nope…I want to see this supposed curse for myself.” “Okay miss it’s all yours, just remember what I told you.” I smiled and thanked him as I put the book into my handbag. As I was walking away the older man yelled after me. “Miss!” I turned around to look back. “Yes!?” “I’ve got a word of advice.” “What would that be?” “Burn that damn thing before it hurts anyone else!”

That night I decided I would see for myself if there was anything to this curse nonsense. I turned off the lights in my apartment and lit some candles. I stood in the center of my bedroom in a circle of salt as the magic 101 website had instructed. I decided I read from a random page…I opened the book…nothing…no Raider of the Lost Ark face melting. Although the book was covered with some indecipherable scribbles the page I’d opened curiously was written in English for some reason. I began to read out loud expecting the worst though I had little doubt that man was full of crap. I continued to read…

From these mortal bonds I remove myself for promise of a greater power…stamina, strength, courage all these shall I possess…with the sole promise that I shall uphold the power of this written word…
This continued for about 7-8 minutes after which I remained in the center of the room still nothing. Then a cold breeze swept through the room making me shiver, but there were no windows open. Oooh is that it… some big scary wind? I laughed at myself for actually believing that this book had some kind of supernatural power. If I’d know what would happen next I would’ve never even taken a second glance at that evil book."
