Description
I tried to make some cool fanart about Amata Almodovar and the Lone Wanderer from Fallout 3 videogame. This is my 'Lone Wanderer' Thomas having a moment of despair. Amata is comforting him. It's tough to be the 'Lone Wanderer'. First he is kicked out of his home, then he loses all his family and is left all alone in the horrible Wasteland. How could anyone mentally survive that? In my version of the story his best friend Amata exits the Vault with him and supports him through all this. I got the idea from the 'Brisa companion' -mod that I use.
I'm learning to paint digitally. This is my third entirely digital painting and the first in which I used any extra layers. I made this with Gimp in 6.2011
If you have any thoughts about how to make this picture better or about Fallout or anything else, please comment.

If only there was a Speech check to convince Amata to join you, either at the end of the Escape! mission or the end of Trouble on the Homefront; for the most part, I always liked her, except for the end of Trouble on the Homefront, and it would've been cool to have her with you. I also wish you could at least form a romance between the two in a subtle way, other than dialogue. Like maybe a parting kiss at the end of Trouble on the Homefront or something. Ah well, that's why fan fiction was invented

Well, Amata and the Lone Wanderer have known each other since they were toddlers. They only consider each other as best friends. But Amata HAD to stay behind to reorganize the Vault and keep peace in it, she's the only one with that kind of talent. She does love the wanderer she's just not IN love with him.

I know there is a subtle romance between the male lw and Sarah Lyons. If you talk to her later she is a lot more opera to you and is less cold, she even flirts with you once I believe and sounds very concerned if you're in danger.

I have to say you did very well and there is a great level of detail, and I always wanted to see what it would be like if Amata left with your character.

Given the overseer is correspondence with the Enclave he may have aloud them into the vault like in the fanfic without Amata there.

Love this. The one flaw in Fallout 3 is that you cannot romance Amata.

Maybe, but if the player chooses to be male there are certain dialogues that imply that the Lone Wanderer loves Amata.
Also, this art doesn't say anything about romance. Amata is just comforting the Wanderer. After all, they've been friends since they were little children.

Hey thanks for the nice comment I see you understand the idea of this picture very well, I'm glad. I actually did this picture before I read Nave's story, and afterwards I realized how well they fit together. It's awesome that other people (well, Nave mostly) have had this same idea and even have written great fanfiction about it. I'll let you know if I make more drawings about this.

Very nice picture. And I'd have to agree with you, there. Being forced out of your home, twice, losing all of your family AND having to face the dangers of the waste would be too much. Ultimately, I'd say most people would avenge their father and then take their own life, if they even made it that far.
Your version is much nicer. lol

Comrade, you and I share a story. Both of us were inspired by a mod wherein Amata joins the Lone Wanderer. Though I lack the ability to draw, I can write.
The Legend of the Wandering Pair from Vault 101 is my take on Fallout 3, over a year in the making, twenty chapters in and, if I may say so myself, quite nice in its own right. It's evolved from humble beginnings to a true alternate history take on the game, wherein many different things have happened as a direct result of Amata coming along, specifically the change from a "Lone Wanderer" to a "Wandering Pair." When I got the mod, I was sitting in class one day, thinking to myself, "So, Amata came with him. What would this change?" Well, the answer hit me: "Everything."
Locations and characters may remain similar, yet two sets of eyes, two perspectives and personalities, tied together by their shared fate and origin, both of them having an impact on the environment everywhere they went, much would be different indeed.
Rubrik079 up there drew a picture for it: [link]
If ever you are interested in reading it, here's the story: [link]
Fair warning, it's long and meant to be that way. Each chapter is purposefully over roughly twenty pages in length, for the sake of quality versus quantity.
But I haven't commented on your picture. I like it! It's very good, it really is. The expressions are clear, the background is nice, and overall it's an interesting piece with a fair amount of emotion carried within. Keep up the good work.

Hey, thanks for the comment! When I played Fallout 3 for the first time, I thought how terrible it would be to wander alone in the Wastelands after 19 years in the Vault. I thought Amata should have been a companion. It certainly would change a lot. She was obviously the Lone Wanderer's best friend and maybe more. I didn't like how that went in the game. Fortunately there was a suitable mod to fix that.
I must admit I have made up some stories about how would it be, if they traveled together. I have even written some short bits for my own amusement. But I in turn can't write good long stories, and they wouldn't be in English anyway. I found your story some months ago, but there were only few chapters in it at that time. It wasn't exactly how I had thought about their story, but it was very close. I remember I also thought those chapters were very well written and logical, and I was going to read it again when it would be ready. You indeed can write! And look at it now: 20 chapters! I'm happy there is someone else, who has had the same thoughts I have and also the will and talent to create such a quality fanfiction about it. I promise to read your story now that it's ready and give feedback.
I have seen Rubrik079's paintings and commented on them. I'm glad to discover another person, that likes to draw Amata. She seems to be very unpopular.
I'm glad you like this painting. Especially because this subject is close to you. I feel like painting another picture about them now. If my inspiration lasts long enough, I will.

Nave-Ninja In reply to Cirandel [2011-07-24 14:45:35 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I suppose twenty chapters is enough of a jumping on point. I got ten more to go before the story is finished, then onto other projects (I'd say finally, but that implies I'm getting tired of the story, which I'm not. It's just been a while in the making, lol).
I'm glad Amata is getting more respect as time goes on. A lot of people didn't like her, I think because of the writing. It was good, but not as good as it could have been, I like to believe. Simply comparing New Vegas to Fallout 3 shows how much of a difference more lines in a character can make.
But really, it all came down to the fact that she kicked you out like the original Overseer. He had more of a reason, I suppose, so again, the writing could have been more clear at that moment. I was okay with it, anyway, and that was a long time before I got the game on my PC with the mod, heh.
And hey, if you ever do make another picture with them, I'd sure be interested in seeing it.

Oh, you're still writing then? Your patience is admirable. I'll read it anyway.
That's what I thought. I didn't like her earlier, but as I said below, I understand her better now. She is very interesting character, but what she did (or how she did it) was shocking and unexpected, kind of out of character. But if you think about it, there is sense in it. She just didn't have to be so cold and brief about it.
But I like my version (and yours) of the story more. Good thing Fallout leaves space for some imagination and mods

Nave-Ninja In reply to Cirandel [2011-07-24 19:58:51 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, still writing it. On a bit of a break now, though, as I tend to do after each tenth chapter, or rather, as I have done so far. Admirable patience is required for such a task as writing a full story over this long, but breaks are good too.
2nd part: Haha, indeed. The mod changed a few things up for me, for example, my varient of Trouble on the Homefront, the quest in which you return to 101, now involves the Enclave. As for Amata being cold and brief, well, again, I cite the lackluster writing involved. A shame, it could have been better, but then again, players (including myself) come full-circle and react the exact way their character would in real life: initially shocked and angered, then later, upon reflection and time past, they come to simply accept what happened. They need not like it, but it is what it is.
'Cept for fanfiction/fanart authors/artists, of course.

Nave-Ninja In reply to Cirandel [2011-07-25 17:06:46 +0000 UTC]
Well, here's the longest answer: in the years or so leading up to my inspiration for the Wandering Pair, I wrote a few things here and there, but never finished any of them. Time went on, and my fanfiction page, along with my documents folder on my computer, was full of half-finished ideas and stories and short oneshots. Chapters rarely went above twelve pages.
So I sat down and thought to myself: what could I do to make my stories better? I decided that longer chapters were the way to go. I pride myself on my typing capabilities, though I don't deny that on occasion an error or two slip past me and my proofing, so I knew I could write many pages in a short amount of time. I wrote the first chapter and it was around 23-25 pages, unedited, so I thought: "Twenty. That's a nice number, it's high, round, and little often do I ever actually reach it."
I concluded that, for this story, I would push myself on each and every chapter, to give my all in every scenario, to add and expand upon as much as I could stomach. If it worked, then I would continue. If not, then most likely I would let the story die. But I think, that even before I published it, I knew that for once, I wanted to finish something, to make it final and absolute. It was only until the reviews started rolling in with encouragement and occasional criticism that I realized I had something that people were interested in. The reviews keep coming, which helps keep me motivated.
So, determined to finish this and maintain my self-promise, I continued to write the story (with special chapters going over fifty pages, like 10 and 20, serving as "book ends" meaning that they kind of represent the end of an act in a play, if I may. 10 ends with finding the Jefferson Memorial for the first time, 20 ends with joining the Brotherhood of Steel, and 30 will be the end of the story). Over a year later and here we are, 2/3rds complete. I'm a big fan of fractions to help keep track of how close the story is to its conclusion, since 30 is a nice, even number.
The shortest answer to the question is: I like to see the very high wordcount next to a comparatively small chapter count.
