Do you have any connection with Poland btw?

Hi Eklatekla,

The original family name was Chmielewski and my grandfather shortened it down to Chmiel. They emigrated to the US from Krakow in the early 1900s. Personally I haven't been there as yet, but I don't think there is any of the extended family left there in Poland.

I see. Well, come to visit at least for touristic reasons (:
Do you know what "chmiel" stands for? It's a name of a plant: hop. (I'm sure you do know.) The suffix -ewski (and -owski, -awski) is a suffix which makes the word an adjective. This type of surname undergoes a change in the last letter when it refers to a woman. So your great grandfather was Chmielewski, but your great grandmother was Chmielewska. I suppose that your grandfather decided to shorten it to Chmiel because this changing form was problematic to use in the US.
I have a friend, who recently moved to Sweden with her man and they got married. His surname is ending in -ski, so she should have his surname and end it with -ska, but she decided to have a masculine surname ending with -ski to simplify it.
