Description
When someone hears "red fox" they picture a red furred fox with black legs and ears with white on the muzzle and tail. But they come in so many other colors. Some red foxes are nicknamed after their fur color, like the silver fox and the cross fox. Red, silver, and cross are all the same fox (Vulpes Vulpes), just with different fur. Some think they are a different type of fox, but that is not true. In the wild red, silver and cross are the only three recognized colors (though black, white, and albino can be found in the wild), but in captivity, they come in many different shades, colors, and patterns. Some come from exotic breeders who sell them as pets, some come from cruel evil fur farms. Many people who own a pet fox actually rescued or adopted the fox from a fur farm instead of getting one from a breeder. The Russian Silver Fox Experiment is breeding mostly only silver colored foxes to study how evolution might have worked in wolves to dogs. They believe silver colored foxes are more friendly than foxes of other colors, which oddly is very much the same for some breeds of dog.
Arctic foxes change color with season; white foxes live on the tundra and are white in the winter and brownish gray in the summer, blue foxes live in costal regions and are blue gray in the winter, and black or chocolate brown in the summer. Arctic foxes also come in platinum and marble.
