Description Full Title : Syria 2012 till date - victim of voyeurism, apathy, preying

background : More than three years that the conflict goes on. Over 200,000 killed, more than 50 million displaced, entire young generation has lost schooling, childhood being refugees...

An important piece for me. First of all the subject matter has been in my mind for long. The sheer neglect of the tragedy in the world has been astounding to me, compared to say, Afghanistan or Iraq wars. Then, the composition, and then the sheer process time given my persisting weakness and subsequent limited input for the painting.

oil on canvas, 75cmX50cms

This is a touching piece. I was wondering what the water represents, and why you chose to paint the tiles the children are resting on?

Thanks for the compliments, dear.

I take it by water you mean the waves on the left of the arch in blue? It's not water, Emily. If you see closely, there is an almost transparent face of a woman to it, with head covered. And it is her flowing gown - she may be a symbol of peace or spirit of Syria or a Syrian woman, who is leaving the scene. That is tragic.

People on the top are not children - if you mean the ones sitting on the tiles. They are grown-ups, freakish, dwarves - us- the outsiders. I describe our attitude to the crisis in the full title.
Top part from left to right  - voyeurism [the guy on the top left peeping out from a window- just watching the misery; in the middle are 2 women snoring away to glory - apathy and on the right side are ferocious looking [at least I intended to!] 2 woman - preying- they'll prey on the dead of Syria - these could be islamic militants, the world powers, whoever looks at the war as a future exploiting opportunity.

As to the tiles, there was no particular reason  to paint them in colour. May be just to add 'colour' to the otherwise dull pic. It can be seen as the colourful world outside Syria though full of voyeurs, apathetic, etc. You see an arch separating the refugee camp? It connects to the tiles above. Same colours. Only the flow of the woman's gown breaks it. Still, you can see the continuation of the tiles through the gown.

Hope that makes sense.

If not, happy to explain more.

Hope you saw Fadia's and her friend's comments below the pic. That's what I was telling you about.

thanks again

You're very welcome.

I clearly need to look more closely at your painting. I see now the face the spirit of Syria, and she's beautiful!

I thought for sure the two in the middle were children. I recognized the people on L and R side were fully grown. I was not sure what they were doing, and now it's clear. The two women do look ferocious and even animal like.

The painting definitely makes more sense to me now. I love how deeply you think and all the symbolism you use. I'm not very good with deciphering symbolism. I will definitely be looking more carefully at your paintings, and asking more questions. There is so much to discover.

Changing the subject now...I'm suffering from writers block. I need a prompt. Do you have a good idea for a writing prompt?

good you asked and now it makes some sense. BTW normally where do you see the pics? size of the monitor screen? Why I'm asking is -  One my acquaintances uses his mobile phone to see it.  Then he loses many details. When he told me that, I insisted at least see it on a lap-top!

and never mind about not noticing some aspects. That you are so open-minded and ask when something is not clear is very valuable to me.

re Writers Block, have written to you separately.

I usually see them on my laptop. It has a small screen, but also I'm not very observant...

it's really  amazing and realistic,
it's very sad and hurt feelings  to see my country "Syria" destroyed, and the people &  children killed by bombs and rocket or by using  another way like "Starving"  but all the world don't care!
they are just keep silent..
i love your painting it's touch my heart and make me cry!

I am really sorry to have upset you, dear Fadia.

It is difficult to imagine pain on such a scale of an entire country when I am not a part of it but I tried my best.

My aim was to convey the suffering so thank you very much for the reply. Thanks as well for the 'fav'.

you take care, honey

Very well done, ckp; you certainly convey the Syria crisis and it's all too sad!
(You mentioned your 'persisting weakness', are you still suffering?)

It is hard to know who to support against Assad. Otherwise, help would have already been given and situation would have been better by now.

what you say is right.
my own reading since the onset of the crisis was - the west should have imposed a no-fly zone right at the beginning, say at least a year-and-half back. Identifying a particular resistance group and supporting it was not necessary for this action.Like in Iraq, this would have greatly weakened Assad and saved a lot of civilians [then only 20,000 were dead, one-tenth of today's figure]. But because of not-too-savory experience of intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq, the west was twice shy when there were identifiable one or two major opposition groups. With their inaction, field became open for all local powers - Turkey, Iran and Al Queda.
Now at least the country should be split in clear areas of govt-dominance and opposition dominance. That would mean antagonising Russia further bur Assad has to be toppled to save further loss of lives and rise in refugees.

You're right! If only our politicians had had more fortitude in doing as you say!
