simple explanation is crystals grow depending on how the molecules fit together- other influences like temperature differences or impurities determine the ultimate shape.Β  check outΒ  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystall… for more detailed explanation.

sa fait 18 ans que j'en ait et je vien d'apprendre que c'est radioactif ^-^

its fact 18 years that I have some and I has just learned that it is radioactive ^-^

Recently it has been found to be very slightly radioactive: its only naturally occurring isotope bismuth-209 decays via alpha decay into thallium-205 with a half-life of more than a billion times the estimated age of the universe.[2]

One of my char's last name is Bismuth, was inspired by a pic of it like this one. This is such a beautiful picture, I wish I owned some.

I have a bismuth crystal. They break so easily. :[ Mine broke in half.

Also my mom had an older crystal I had when I was kid and put it in her pocketbook then put the pocketbook in a hot car. it..melted. It actually melted. Amazing. LOEV BISMUTH

You own a piece? I've heard it's somewhat toxic. How true is that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cl2007 In reply to BismuthIllusion [2009-03-21 17:24:54 +0000 UTC]

Bismuth compounds are used in cosmetics, medicines, and in medical procedures. As the toxicity of lead has become more apparent in recent years, alloy uses for bismuth metal as a replacement for lead have become an increasing part of bismuth's commercial importance. - wikipedia

I love the way this stuff looks. I got a piece of it somewhere when I was a kid and always wondered where such a cool rock came from. I later found out that my piece was created in a lab. I still love it
