Description This woodworking technique is called intarsia.... a 14th century Italian technique (and possibly tracing back to Tarsis in ancient Anatolia). It's made like a puzzle and then glued down on thin plywood.

walnut and maple- approx. 8.5 x 6.5 inches (22 x 16 cm) and ready for hanging (saw tooth hanger on back)

inspired by some African Tribal masks.

Wow! Haven't seen this technique in years. Dad used to make this when he still had his jig saw. Time consuming, but it was fun to make and to design.

They indeed take time - the lips we did for the kitchen took two weeks to get in the right shape

Btw. You are featured in this week's journal on my main page - puzzle boxes and puzzles.

I love the flow and the abstract nature of this piece - yet i can see all the elements of it being a mask/face

Wow, exceptionally well put together then How long did this take you, its the sort of thing I really like. Quite an organic look, whilst still having a 'clean' quality to it.

about 4 hours time (if it's your first try... allow more time )... its about 8" (20cm) x 6.5" (16.5cm)

This really is something
The choice of woods is lovely, and the design really showcases the contrast of the woods.
How did you go about making the two bits of wood?

Thanks again! It's actually 13 pieces + the backing. Cut each piece out separately, shape and finish, then glue to a thin piece of plywood
