Description
Okay, so I was all set to blitz through the Doctor at the rate I'd been going at previously, when I realized "Hang on...I don't even have a proper stallion rig yet." (Duct Toast didn't have a rig of his own, he was just posed with the mare rig and then modified from there because I was lazy. Also his facial anatomy was more coltish.) So since I knew that I'd hate myself for it later down the road if I never made one, I sacrificed short-term gain for the long road, as taking my time to get a nice stallion rig will really pay off. So that's why I've fallen a bit behind in my modeling.I took the time to utilize everything I've learned from working with the mare rig for the past few months, as you can never quite tell how good the geometry is until you rig it and play around with it. For example, the mare model needed way the frick more edge loops around her midsection for the more dynamic poses, and the facial anatomy, while it looks nice enough in the default pose, is revealed to have the most awkward configuration of polygon loops ever the second you attempt to pose it. Unfortunately you can't go around changing the geometry of an already-rigged model without having to redo the rig, so I've been stuck making heavy tweaks to the mare every single time I pose her. But now I've corrected all of these things in the stallion before rigging him, and he'll overall be a much better model in the long run as a result.
There are actually a ton of very subtle proportion differences between the two models, even though they're superficially quite similar aside from the face.
I used to be a bit averse to showing the wireframe of my models for fear that someone might attempt to reverse engineer them or something. Then I realized that was stupid--if you can somehow pull off reverse engineering my models just by looking at a low-res screenshot of the wireframe, then damn if you don't deserve access to the model at that point. o_O

Do you use Maya for these or something else? Also, do you know of any tutorials (any that you happen to use; I don't expect you to go out of your way to find some, obviously). I've tried Maya before, but my spacial problems got in the way...
Anyway, these are beautiful!

I use 3DS max, but unfortunately I learned how to model in college. There are plenty of tutorials for learning the tools, but for learning how to get the right shapes in 3ds max is more...innate...the sort of thing I'm not sure how to explain. I do intend to post a "Let's Model" of Discord soon though, so people can see how I work.

Ok. I'll look out for that. Thank you!

That's nice and good to know, although personally I wish there's a Big Mac model so that it can be used for Gmod use.

Lol, I know nothing at all about making models for Gmod, so even if I do make a Big Mac at some point, I can pretty much guarantee that it would not work well for it.

That's effing AMAZING!*o* I wish I could do anything like this. I'm a total noob in 3DsMax. Yet.T-T
Do you start modelling from a box?o_?
Aand did you think about making some modelling tutorials?

Lesse, I stared the head from a spline, the body from an oil drum, and the legs from cylinders, and then stitched them together. I start most of the manes and tails from boxes.
I have definitely want to do some kind of tutorial set at some point. The problem is that the models take ages, aren't very entertaining to watch, and I tend to jump all over the place as I work, and spend a lot of time tweaking individual vertices endlessly. Maybe I could record myself doing Discord, though. >:3

Ooooh, I seee.*O* Thanks.
Dunno, I love watching how artists work. It's like a theoretical knowledge
Mygosh, it'd be the purrfect!*o* Hope you will record the video. Can't.Wait.To.Watch.*Q*

You guyyyssss, this isn't fast. xP I spent most of yesterday in an angsty funk so I barely got anything done.

That's still faster than me is all xD
Then again, I'm just starting out with modeling.
What program do you use? :0

I use 3ds Max. It's kind of funny because yesterday I was working in the computer lab while surrounded by a bunch of Level 1 3D students, and I couldn't help feeling a bit out of place. xP

Is it pretty easy to use?
I should probably work with more professional programs. I have the student edition of Maya, but that's as professional as I have xD
I usually use AC3D, but it's pretty limited. The next best thing is Blender, but holy hell is that thing complicated.
You're pretty damn good, I'll say. Must boost your ego a bit though, right? xD
Kinda how I felt in my Computer Graphics class back in High School. I already knew how to use Photoshop pretty well, and in the next school I went to, the damn teacher only knew about half of what I did about PS and Illustrator (because she only used the book. :I)

Max is....pretty complicated (about as complicated as any of the other big-name 3D programs.) But pretty much all the work I do is as simple as vertex manipulation by hand. Even the rigging (I just take one of the ready-made rigs, adjust the bones to fit the model, and then adjust all the vertex weights by hand.)
And Maya is certainly professional! I've never used it, but I've read that it's better suited to film, while Max is better suited to games (I do low-poly work, so I don't need anything fancy anyway.)

Pah, slow is a relative term. The first big picture I did took me three weeks, and I didn't even draw the background for it.

Heh, I usually just add a unicorn horn to the model if I'm doing a unicorn. Much easier than making a whole new rig for what is essentially the same model.
