Description
One of the more iconic snouters, the earwing (Otopteryx volitans) is a highly derived hopsorrhinid, which is able to fly using muscles and bones in its ears. Its nasarium, like all hopsorrhinids, is jointed and serves as an effective means of locomotion on the ground. Back when the Hy-yi-yi archipelago still existed, Earwings were a common sight in the mountain meadows of the larger islands. In the book, Otopteryx's pelt is described as being highly metallic looking, being comparable to hummingbirds and butterflies. Hopefully I didn't make it too dull. Also, a digital painting with a background! Not bad for a first try, right?
Update:
This piece is outdated. The colour is wrong, as are the hands, face, and nasopodium.Β

Lovely drawing! I find earwings rather cute. They look like a mix between a mouse, rabbit and a hummingbird.
I remember reading about earwings ages ago, but when I researched it for a story I'm writing, I spent many frustrating hours searching for information and couldn't find anything (the story is set on an estate built on a newly-discovered South Pacific island, and one of the island's many quirks is that it has the sole remaining population of earwings on Earth) Thanks for proving I'm not (completely) crazy and didn't just dream up this creature.

I always wondered......just exactly why would shouters evolve to walk on their noses in the first place?

Well, primitive snouters used their nasarium as a balancing platform so they could use all four limbs to dismember prey when consuming it. I don't know if your hind legs are really required for eating, but if it wasn't for that logic, snouters would've never existed. Thanks for the watch by the way!
