Description Watch out, it's a big file!

Also see how to color fleece eyes to go on your hat. --> [link]
How to replace the band with ear-flaps! --> [link]
And how to sew on ears! --> [link]

Pattern: also notes the size of the rectangle
NOTE: pattern includes a 1/4" or .6cm seam allowance. That means sew that far from the edge.

If you are one of the many people only familiar with the metric system, I'm sorry I didn't include those measurements but here is a wonderful conversion tool. --> [link]

Alright you've been waiting for it so here it is. Firstly I'd like to state that this was a big pain to make. I have no idea how others can stand to make these.

Now this is just a basic hat so you can embellish it however you want. Please don't ask me how to make anything specific; either you'll have to figure it out or buy it from me.

Please don't post this anywhere, kindly leave a link instead.
Tutorial (c) me, Clearkid - For the glory of God!

Edit: OK, so I've had several people express confusion on the last step. I will attempt to clarify it here:

First sew the short edges of the band together, forming a loop. Then fold it the long way with the seam inside so you have a double thick loop. Take your main hat part and turn it inside out with the seams facing out. Turn the hat upside-down like a bowl! Now, take your double thick band with it's two raw edges facing up, and place it INSIDE the hat so that those two edges line up the the edge of the hat. Pin it together starting with the seam of the loop lined up with the back seam of you hat. Then fold it in half and pin the front, and then the sides and in-between. Then you're going to sew the tree layers together at the top. When you've finished, take out your pins and fold the brim down, and turn the hat right-side-out again to finish.

Now, that's the detailed explaination. In essence, all you're really doing in the last step, is sewing the brim to the bottom of the hat in a way that hides the seam on the inside. Hope it helps guys! If you still have questions, feel free to post them here.

Want to see what others have made? --> [link]

And one last thing. If you make a hat, I'd love to see it. You can post your links here. :3

Thank you for this. When I sewed my first hat last year, I had forgotten to (plus i just didn't know how to) add that bottom brim. I can't wait to try this method out.~

This is the one I made. [link] Not bad for my first hat, but using the other pattern will make it like 10 times better. haha.

Oh, and I have a question if you don't mind. ^^' Since you've been doing this for awhile and all.
You see, I want to maybe start selling these. (Or something like it. Minus the cross-stitching. It took far too long.) Considering all the extra stuff to it, plus the wires, and general time requirement for it, I was thinking somewhere between 50 and 60 for a price range. (I've looked at numerous price charts, including yours. And all seem to be around that range for something like this. ;__; ) Of course, the quality would be better as well. The one i have on here is the first one I made ever, so it definitely needs some improvement.

To make horse ears on a hat? Not that hard actually just cut out a slim triangle, and pinch the bottome ends together, it should look like a horse ear if that helps,

I've used this idea to draft my own pattern for hats. Before this I just cut semicircles, folded the edge and hoped for the best. That didn't always work... Here's a link to the hats I've made: [link]

Hi again! Before you answer that other comment I posted here, I just read this:

"Want to sell stuff you made using it? You can, BUT you have to link back or tell others about the tutorial so they have the choice to make their own just like you.”

I will totally do this, and thank you for your awesome tutorials!

I don’t think I showed you the hat I’ve made with your tutorials… It’s here: [link]
I made a few more in the past, but I never photographed them, and none of them cam out as good as this one.

I hope you don’t mind that I want to sell some hats using this design, but using my own and my costumers’ designs and ideas for embellishments. If you do have a problem with it, just tell me, and I won’t sell anything, maybe just give them away to friends. I would always give you credit though, if I do sell them.

Thank you.

I wonder how would i do the 4 flaps on the back of lucario's head?
My mom is quiet insultive about this. afraid i would waste her money or something.

You could hand sew on the wings and eyes. Go to the sewing on ears how to (link in description) but put the triangle in the front instead of the sides

I want to use this to make a reversible hat... I have the design mostly figured out but I just can't figure out how I would the band to the two sides without showing seams... any advice? I normally wouldn't ask but I really cant figure it out.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to audreyaardvark [2011-09-20 16:50:57 +0000 UTC]

Sew both tops together then sew one to one edge of the band and one to the other, leaving a 4 inch hole. You'll get a capsule shaped thing. Then through the hole pull the whole thing right-side-out and put one half inside the other. You'll have 4 inches to sew up by hand, but this puts all the seams on the inside. Take a stitch through both at the top if you really want to keep it in place.
