Description Watch out it's a big file!

Start by making a fleece hat --> [link]

My number one compliment on my hats has to be: "Omg I love those eyes! How do you do that?!" So I thought instead of trying to explain it to everyone that asks, it'd be easier to just point them to this tutorial.

Now you too, can have amazing eyes on your hats!

One little tip, don't be afraid to use different colors in your eyes. Here I added yellow to my blue and I even picked blues that ranged from purple-blue to green-blue. If you're doing gold, try adding a little pink and orange, for brown add a little red and green. You'll be amazed how that little extra color can make your eyes come to life!

Tutorial (c) clearkid. Please do not re-post this file, kindly leave a link instead.

But how do you sew the eye ON to the hat without seeing seams? I find that confusing.

So very helpful. Not many artists who have valuable ideas often give up their trade secrets. Very generous of you.

Will the colors fade when you wash the hat? For example, you wash the hat in the washers. Will it do some coloring damages?

I've had it hold up pretty well actually. It does fade a bit in the wash, but no serious damage. you Can always color over the old stuff too.

I enjoyed this tutorial. But, I have to ask, don't the colours wash and fade? I know it's sharpie, but I thought sharpie fades with time?

Question: Do you ever have the problem of the sharpies fading over time??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to insanekakashi [2011-01-04 16:24:30 +0000 UTC]

They do fade some yes, but it comes with the general wearing out of the hat.

Amazing Tutorials! <3
Love them all, thanks for taking time out of your day to make them!
I have a quick question though!
Exactly, how would you put the eyes on the hat?
And, is Sharpie your recommendation or is there something better?
Thank you! :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to BattlerxAnge [2010-12-27 05:15:56 +0000 UTC]

Hand stitch them on. Sharpies are the best I've found so far.

Wow, it's so cool! ^^
Thou I got a question...you said to sew a blank eye on first right? So do we sew the colored one on top of it? Or just make the colored and then sew it on separately. Thou they have to be last for the hat. Sry, just a little confused, but it's amazing. ^^

this looks brilliant XD umm just a question, can you wash the hats after you've sewn the eyes on or will the permanent marker run/fade easily?

hinata-yna13 [2010-07-13 10:16:49 +0000 UTC]

can you use any permanent markers?
and how do you sew it on without seeing your stitch XD

Mita-Ookami [2010-06-26 02:57:04 +0000 UTC]

How do you attach the eye to the hat? Would iron-on work?

ObsidianKaesken [2010-06-08 19:59:22 +0000 UTC]

I have also practiced under this tutorial as well. I've always had problems with coloring eyes and wasn't too certain that I could do it on felt or fleece. You have done an amazing job!

Here's what I was able to do following your tutorial (I forgot the white spot up top X] ) but I had to put my pen in the picture because my camera kept trying to focus into the floor only. x.X

clearkid In reply to Blitzergeldert [2009-07-05 05:03:35 +0000 UTC]

Nah they wear off. It's only really bad when you're working with it in large areas for a prolonged period of time, like the giraffe I did. xD

MrShineyBaldy [2009-07-02 22:17:52 +0000 UTC]

so, once u sew the eyes onto the hat and u have everything else that u need on there, can you wash it? or should you not because of the marker? is there a certian way to wash it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to MrShineyBaldy [2009-07-03 02:35:37 +0000 UTC]

You can carefully wash it by hand.

not with hot/warm water because the sharpie will run.

Out of curiosity, do you think this method would work with prisma or copic markers? I know some people use them when they decorate the canvas shoes and such.
Also, I haven't worked with fleece before, is it possible to scotch guard it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to lilydragon [2009-02-20 17:13:51 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, those are good questions that I don't have answers for.
I do know that people usually seal the shoes after drawing on them but I don't know if that's an extra precaution or necessary to preserve the marks.

You'd have to test it for yourself and see what happens.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lilydragon In reply to clearkid [2009-02-20 17:48:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well. Thank you anyway.
I'm pretty sure it's for preservation. I know prismas like to bleed all over your paper if you're isn't paying attention. It's probably the same with fabric. XD
Trail and error here I come!

If you like I'll let you know how it goes.
Assuming I can figure out my new sewing machine first. XP

clearkid In reply to lilydragon [2009-02-20 19:32:17 +0000 UTC]

I would love it if you shared your findings, I'm as curious as you.
I would probably test it on some scraps before I did it on an actual hat, though.
Good Luck!

Have you ever thought of using fabric markers for the eyes on the hats you make? They come in lots of colors, and then you wouldn't have to worry about the colors smearing, running, etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to pfk [2009-01-05 04:36:57 +0000 UTC]

They actually stick about the same, but you have to get the kind that doesn't require iron setting.

Are your hats machine-washable, even with permanent marker?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to TwistedViper [2008-12-19 06:07:24 +0000 UTC]

It's not usually suggested, no. While I haven't tested one with sharpies though the wash, I do know that the washing machine tends to like to eat fleece. I would suggest washing any fleece hat by hand to preserve its soft texture as long as possible.
