Watch out it's a big file!Start by making a fleece hat --> [link]
My number one compliment on my hats has to be: "Omg I love those eyes! How do you do that?!" So I thought instead of trying to explain it to everyone that asks, it'd be easier to just point them to this tutorial.
Now you too, can have amazing eyes on your hats!
One little tip, don't be afraid to use different colors in your eyes. Here I added yellow to my blue and I even picked blues that ranged from purple-blue to green-blue. If you're doing gold, try adding a little pink and orange, for brown add a little red and green. You'll be amazed how that little extra color can make your eyes come to life!
Tutorial (c) clearkid. Please do not re-post this file, kindly leave a link instead.

I just tested it.... you were right. My washing machine had a lovely fleece feast.... And the permanent marker didn't do so hot as well xD

lol I was curious! xD And it was just a test hat (of sorts), so I was just gonna toss it anyway (I'm a total genius aren't I? xD)

While this is a really awesome way to make spifftastical eyes, I was wondering if you could also print out patterns (or use Photoshop so make some eyes) on the computer on t-shirt transfer paper and do it that way? I mean, I was just wondering if you tried thatt.. 'cause I haven't XD

Thanks.
One problem with transfer paper: fleece is made out of plastic and an iron will melt it. xD
I've heard fabric paints work alright, although you have to brush it to keep it from clumping which would be hard for eyes. One thing I'd love to do if I had a machine for it would be to embroider the eyes on with colored thread.

Yeah, that's something I've wanted to look into too! What kind of machine do people use for that? o.o

An embroidery machine. You actually get to make a pattern on the computer, transfer it to the machine and it does all the sewing for you. They're reeealy expensive though. e_e

x.x Sounds like it... though what about things like patches? I have some that I wanna put on a hat I made from my brother, but I dunno I so put them on.. XD I've sewn them... but the patch keeps coming undone. x.x

Are they the really stiff kind? Those would be really hard to sew onto a hat. x: All the advice I can really give you is to make about a hundred little stitches around the edges - oh, and make sure you aren't using really old thread. Old thread breaks easily.

MiracleRaverDJMelody In reply to clearkid [2008-12-10 16:31:19 +0000 UTC]
Wow, I don't really know how old the thread is I'm using... though I can safely assumes it's pretty old. XD
Someone said that it helps if you iron them on first and then stitch them.. but I wasn't sure if it had to do with a specific kind of patch. >.>

Yes, some patches have an iron on backing. It's kind of waxy. You still don't want to get an iron near fleece though. If you want to make a serious patch hat, make something out of denim or canvas.

COOL
You've inspired me to attempt anime eyes.
Although I did not use markers, I made my first hat without buttons! [link]
So yeah, thanks ^____^

I found a way of making "anime" style eyes for plushies, which'd work with hats. You start with felt (or fleece, like you have here), and paint on the details with acrylic paints. The paints work well, and are waterproof once they've dried. They also don't "spread" as much as markers, and don't rub off as much!

Don't they "cake up" and get stiff when the paint dries? Hmm, something to test out...

PixelMecha In reply to clearkid [2008-11-04 16:06:45 +0000 UTC]
I've found the acrylic does go slightly stiff, but not enough for it to crack when bent, and it's actually quite flexible as the pigment is suspended in a kind of plastic (an acryl, hence "acrylic" paint) so when it dries, it becomes water resistant and flexible. I have used it in the past to paint onto the toy itself it's good for features such as mouths and patterns (even fur fabric, I just madee sure to keep brushing it with an old brush whilst it dried to stop it clumping together, to add patterns to fur.).
You might find it just doesn't work for your style, but it's worth experimenting first on some scrap fabric or something, maybe trying it out!

That's alright! It took me ages to figure out how to do eyes that looked good, sewing felt on top of felt was where I started and that never looked so good. It's nice for people to share tips, just like your tutorial here! I actually used markers on somefabric after reading this tutorial, turned out great, so you've helped me too!

i know you're using a permanent marker, but does it fade when you wash it? (i dunno if you'd wash a hat though. lawl) i used sharpie on my pants, and it washed out after a few times. :[ but still... i don't think you'd wash a hat. XDD

That's a good point. Yes, I'd expect it to fade some if you washed it. But as for washing, you'd only need to wash it like once a year unless you got it really dirty. Even so, if you're doing any kind of details like eyes and whatnot, I'd suggest washing it by hand and not dumping it in the washer. That cuts down on the stress and bleeding/fading a lot.
That in mind, it should hold up pretty well if you take good care of it, and if worse comes to worse, you can always add more sharpie on top. xD

I'm guessing it just dries after a while, and it able to be touched?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
clearkid In reply to xBrittneyJane [2008-09-06 23:25:01 +0000 UTC]
Actually, most of the ink seeps into the fibers of the fabric. If you press it against the paper, you remove any left over color and you'll be able to touch it.
