Description
Welcome Ladies and GentlemanNow when I was still making my Tuxedo Mask Cosplay from Sailormoon I was only days away from the convention and I still had not made my hat yet. My hat was of course a gentleman's top hat which is very long, we are talking Abraham Lincoln size. So I searched DA and all I could find were tutorials on how to make female Mini Top hats, and cardboard ones. I eventually worked out how to make a top hat and recorded the steps I was following. Thus I have created this tutorial for you today on how to create your very own Gentleman Top Hat.
Goodbye now

here's my final product! I wore this hat to Youmacon. This was a very fun project to make - THANK YOU so much! (I have a lot of extra fabric now though... I bought 1.5 yds of felt because I had no idea how much to buy!)

Thanks for the tutorial: it'll be a lot of help when I put together my Layton cosplay though.
Quick question though: I asked for thick card at my local craft store and got a funny look. Would bristol board or cardboard suffice?

bristol board would be perfect. Personally, I think cardboard would be too thick and not very easy to use. I hope this helped!

Wonderful, thanks for the advice.Β Β Now all that's left for me to do is to try to put the hat together, uncoordinated as I am. Hopefully it pans out.Β

π: 0 β©: 1

tabs are the fold out pieces of card at the base of the tube

Just used this to make a miniature top hat! Works well!
Although I had a hard time seeing the pictures since they are very dark. But the description worked well even without them. Thank you!

Is there a way I could make the brim of the hat curl up a little at the sides? I'm cosplaying Ciel at Halloween (too broke for a con!) and I need his top hat to go and terrorize the town (^0^)
π: 0 β©: 1
chioky In reply to legendarymudkip [2013-09-20 06:56:04 +0000 UTC]
use bent wire and use two layers of card

Thank you! I have another question: Is there a way I could make the hat a little curved (smaller towards the bottom, wider at the top)? Like this:Β www.gentlemansemporium.com/stoβ¦

Will this method work with a fabric that is more like silk? Or does it absolutely have to be a felt-like fabric?
π: 0 β©: 1
chioky In reply to Lyxa-Chan [2013-06-10 19:42:49 +0000 UTC]
silk can be used as long as you stretch it tight
π: 0 β©: 1
Lyxa-Chan In reply to chioky [2013-06-11 12:51:23 +0000 UTC]
Sweet, thanks! The hot glue will still stick to it/won't discolor it? (most of the hot glue will be in unseen areas anyway, pertaining to the discoloration question, I just like to be double sure.
) When I make the hate I will be sure to link you pictures and tell you if I run into any problems with the silk in case anyone else has similar questions?
Though it won't be for a while, haha...
