<<< Part Two >>>*Edit: ZOMG! *dies*
Thank you for the Daily Deviation `znow-white !!! What an honor to be featured!
I hope everyone has a lovely top hat very soon! Make some tophats my pretties!
It's finally finished.
I hope you enjoy it, if anything is unclear, please feel free to leave a comment, I will try to elaborate. I'm prettysure everything is clear, but I made the hat, so it might not be clear to everyone.
Here's mine! oh, and this more recent one too...
*The reason I have not put what the seam allowance values, is simply because the fabric has to fit snugly against the cardboard base. I don't want to put a set amount, and have wrinkly hats out there. Thicker fabrics will fit differently than thing ones. So, if you make the hat, sew it to make it as snug as possible to the base, and then cut off the surplus, leaving approximately 1/4" seam allowance.
**If you use this tutorial to make your own hat, please have the courtesy of putting a link back to my tutorial, and leave a comment here with a link to your deviation so that I can see your masterpiece!!

I just can't get the cardboard form into the fabric... could you please explain how to do it?

Once you've flipped the brim fabric inside-out through the center hole, you may have to curve the cardstock a bit to get it through the hole. Then pull the rest of the fabric over top.

If I want to make a tophat like this with leather, should I keep the cardboard under it or would it be better to make the hat without the cardboard?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Idzit In reply to dragonvlame [2011-02-15 06:01:06 +0000 UTC]
It depends if you want to make it floppy or not, and what kind of leather you're using, really.

dragonvlame In reply to Idzit [2011-02-15 08:09:12 +0000 UTC]
The leather is not really thick but it is thicker than fake leather... I use it for medieval leather pouches and such... Or is it an idea to make a thin cardboard hat instead of thicker cardboard so that it is firmer than without the cardboard but that it doesn't have an overload of cardboard?

Idzit In reply to dragonvlame [2011-02-15 13:50:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you could use a thinner cardboard, or even some buckram (since you're actually putting effort into this). Buckram can be steamed into shape too, which is nice.

I'm trying to make a top hat...and you are certainly right, I'm confused after step 7.
You said to pin the wrong side together, so the right side should be facing outwards right? Then if the outer circle is sewn together, the seam can be seen on the outside. Is this correct?
After that it's inverted to wrong side facing outwards.
Later on, at step 10, you said to slip the fabric inside and glue it together. I'm assuming that the inverted fabric from step 7 (wrong side facing outwards) is re-inverted back to the right side face outwards while slipping the cardboard through. How do you put the glue in and glue the fabric to the cardboard then? O_o
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
