Description
This is a simple tutorial on how to make an aviator cap.1. sew the short ends of the headband together to make a ring.
2. sew the 4 triangles together so you get a half sphere and sew this to the headband
3. position the ear flaps appropriately and sew to the bottom of the headband.
I only lined my ear flaps to give them extra weight, but if you choose to line the entire hat, you will basically need to make two of these one of the outer fabric and one of the lining fabric and sew them together.
Here's my finished product:
Sorry about the skull, I had a dopey face and this was an improvement...

Lol, tried this with paper. It turned out... alright. The design's meant for leather, that's a given.
Anyways, thanks for posting it.

Well, paper would definitely not be a good material to make this out of XD
But other fabrics like fleece and cotton should work as well as long as you make a liner for it or use interfacing for added stability.

Yeah, I could've easily guessed that paper wasn't the best medium, but hey, I was bored and really had nothing to do.
And that's cool. Perhaps sometime in the near future I'll make it out of fabric.

I am attempting to make this hat Thank you for the tutorial.
I was wondering what fabric you would recommend for the inside of the hat. The fabric I have is sort of thin but I don't know what should be on the inside to level it out. What would you recommend? c:

Cristophine In reply to HeartstringsPuppet [2011-04-28 22:52:53 +0000 UTC]
Probably something soft for the lining like cotton or flannel. If you think your fabric is too thin you could get iron-on fusible interfacing which will basically give your fabric some weight. Hope that helps.

I was wondering, do aviator caps always have to be made of leather or brown or can it be made from regular fabric?

Quick question... I was looking up aviator hat things because of the following hat- [link]
Would it be possible to use fabric with YOUR pattern to achieve it? or must it be leather?
