Description Base Fleece Hat Tutorial --> [link]
If you want to wire your ears so they stand up: [link]
Part 2 of making a Typhlosion hat and the patterns for this: [link]

So this is actually part one of three tutorials centered on this new Typhlosion hat I made, and now you can learn to make it too.

Don't feel limited to ears either, this can be used for anything that you want to put through a seam!

Bonus tip: If you're using a sewing machine, use your reverse function to sew back first and then forward. This will keep your stitches from unraveling.

Tutorial (c) ~clearkid Please don't re-post this anywhere, kindly leave a link instead.

For the glory of God!

The actual patterns are linked to in the descriptions. They're .pdf format though so you'll need adobe reader.

so I'm a little confused...on your hat did you leave the seams open for the ears, tuck them in, and then when you sewed the ears on it was kinda like a continuation of the seam? I'm working on a hat myself except with jesterlike ears (same basic concept I figured)

clearkid In reply to KazeCobra [2010-05-25 03:52:45 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. It's much easier that way.

Okay, so so far your tutorial has been pretty helpful [for the basic hat making], but I'm a little confused. When you sew on the ears, is the rest of the hat sewed already? Or are you attaching them before you sew the two sets of triangles together?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to CCKip [2010-02-18 06:45:42 +0000 UTC]

You're sandwiching them between the two sets of tirangles before the hat is finished, yes.

and all your tutorials freakin rock!

*hugs*

clearkid In reply to pixierabbits [2011-06-04 17:48:17 +0000 UTC]

You take the pattern for the ear, cut it apart where you want the color to change, add seam allowance to the cut edge on both pieces and cut them out of different colors. Then sew the two pieces back into one side of the ear (do that for all the ear pieces) then sew the ear together as you would a normal one. Good luck

Would it be possible to sew ears on after the hat is already finished? I'm not the best at sewing, so I wanted to purchase a pink hat and then sew on the very long bunny ears afterwards.
Either that, or I'll just take the facial features, buy the hat at Ai-Kon next year and then sew them on there...
What would you suggest? Oh, here's the hat I'm trying to do, by the way.

clearkid In reply to hell-of-the-darkness [2009-08-06 05:38:19 +0000 UTC]

I'd say, yes you can just whip stitch and sew the ears on top if you like, although it's not quite as neat as sewing them in a seam. But I would encourage you to make the hat too, at least then your fabrics will match, and it's really not that hard.
Either way, good luck!

Ahhh, your tutorials are so useful, thanks so much for making them! C:

I do have one question, though. Is there a way to prevent the ears from becoming really floppy? I've tried once using a semi-thick fabric, and one ear ended up becoming a flap instead, hahahah.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to Ruenisa [2009-07-23 04:12:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, if the ears are round you can stuff them, otherwise you can use foam or you can put wire in them. Generally wire is the best choice for best pose-ability or very tall ears. The important thing to remember when using it though is that you have brace the ears against you head to keep them steady, so you have to make a little loop for a base inside.

I love your basic hat tutorial, and I love this wing one. I plan on making a hat with wings, and figure it to be the same process. I am worried, however, about how to attach them. I am going to use wire so they have some support, and am completely unsure of how to attach them to the hat.
Any way you could help me with that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to gothicmennace [2009-07-23 04:01:19 +0000 UTC]

It's actually not as hard as you would think. My best advice is to sew your two wings and make your wire structure to go inside both wings from one piece of wire so that the wings are connected in the middle with a short distance between. Then place it on the back of your hat and sew a rectangular patch over the spot between the wings securing it and covering the wire. Then you can bend your wings back and you're done.
