Description Base Fleece Hat Tutorial --> [link]
If you want to wire your ears so they stand up: [link]
Part 2 of making a Typhlosion hat and the patterns for this: [link]

So this is actually part one of three tutorials centered on this new Typhlosion hat I made, and now you can learn to make it too.

Don't feel limited to ears either, this can be used for anything that you want to put through a seam!

Bonus tip: If you're using a sewing machine, use your reverse function to sew back first and then forward. This will keep your stitches from unraveling.

Tutorial (c) ~clearkid Please don't re-post this anywhere, kindly leave a link instead.

For the glory of God!

If you have any questions, feel free to post them below.

Little ears like these stand up on their own, but bigger and heavier ears, if you don't add extra support, will flop over. If you put wire in them you can bend them to any shape.

hi, so i made a hat, thanks to your amazing tutorial! muchas gracias. but i didn't put in the ears while i was doing that... oops. so the hat's already sewed up, you know. advise on that, please?
also, they're rabbit ears, so they're slightly longer, and i'm fairly sure that they're going to flop over, although i stuffed them. any ideas would be really appreciated!

clearkid In reply to Naturally-Quirky [2009-07-04 15:35:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, you have two options.
#1 You can rip the stitches out of the seam on the top, put your ears in and sew it back up.
Or #2, you can hand stitch the ears on top of the hat in an oval shape. Takes longer to do, but if you stuff the ears well it'll help them to stay up.

thanks! i was actually too impatient and just sewed them on. so they flop over, but it's still really cute! only now it's just sort of a generic animal hat instead of rabbit. but i love it!

Thank you for making these tutorials! I really appricate them. Although, I am a little confused. Do you add the ears after you make the basic hat? Haha, I sound like a noob.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

clearkid In reply to Kanga-Ruue [2009-06-28 16:53:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes you make the ears first and then sew them into the hat in the second sewing step. Although, if you've finished the hat first you still can seam-rip two little holes and then sew your ears in.

Thank you SO MUCH. I am making my first hat and this is very needed. I am on a sad budget of felt, unfortunately, but one day I hope to make a hat as nice looking as yours. I'll send a pic when I finish my silly felt one though.

okay now I'm freaking out... Xd I've seen the basic hat tut. and I want ears too.. and I see this and this is a completely different shape than the simple hat Xd I think this is the part for your finished item? (lost the name) maybe you can make one that goes on from the part of the basic fleece hat? Xd and... (sorry for being so damn nasty) [link] I want to make something like that... how am I going to do that..?XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to dragonvlame [2009-04-21 04:32:43 +0000 UTC]

I know, it looks different. x:
All you really have to do is put the ears inside and sew the top seam though. You'll just have a little more edge.
You can do it, I have faith in you.

This is an excellent tutorial (as are your others) and I really love all of the hats and scarves you have created. You are really talented! My only question is, with big standing up ears on the hats (like the ears on your Glaceon hat) do you have to put a bit of stuffing in the base of the ear to keep it standing upright? Or stitch the bottom bit of wire to the hat itself? How do you keep really long ears from flopping over?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to HavokInHalloweenTown [2009-03-21 04:51:35 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you.
Ah, the subjects of more tutorials! xD
If it's a big ear with a skinny base like the glaceon ears, you sew them in the same way, but you poke wire inside. You basically create kind of an ear tiara, with a loop in the back for support.
If they're tall but have a wide base, like pachirisu, you can stuff the ears, but then you have to sew them on by hand because the base makes a circle.
Or if it's a tall fox or wolf ear, you can sew the ear on by hand in a C shape and it'll stay up by itself. C:

And also, would it bother you if I made bunny hats just like yours? I love the spotted one and their ears x3

Not really, but you might want to give them your personal touch anyway.

Aren't there parts in the mountains that aren't so much? Or you could just sell them overseas like I do. xD
I look forward to seeing what you make.

HavokInHalloweenTown In reply to clearkid [2009-03-22 01:49:11 +0000 UTC]

Yea, it does get cold in the mountains, but I live in suburbia near a major city where it doesn't get really cold Dx Yea, I might sell some if that is alright with you (if not, that's fine xD). My cousin has an OBSESSION with basset hounds, so I plan on making one for her. The big floppy ears are going to be like earwarmers. Yea, I'll let you know when I have some pics up of what I make ^^

clearkid In reply to HavokInHalloweenTown [2009-03-22 02:31:28 +0000 UTC]

I bet that'll be really cute. :3
If you want to sell em, go for it, you'll just have to compete with me. xD (Although, not really, because I have more requests than I know what to do with anyway, that's why I make tutorials.)

HavokInHalloweenTown In reply to clearkid [2009-03-22 04:27:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks ^^ Yea, I thought I'd check with you first if I could sell some xD Some people say no (which is completely understandable). Yea, I was looking at some pokemon yesterday and I was thinking to myself "They'd be kind of impossible to make into hats" xD

You're welcome.
There's actually another way I use for larger ears to help them stay up better, but you have to have a lot more patience for that method.

KekipiChaotic In reply to clearkid [2009-03-24 01:07:30 +0000 UTC]

Hehes, I know :]
Its not really somthing you'd have to do anyway, would just be interesting to see how it is done

You see, I just recently got a sewing machine so im reading up on how to do things [like make hats <3] I've learned alot so far that I would have realllly messed up if I had gone ahead and just tried to do it all on my own,lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

clearkid In reply to KekipiChaotic [2009-03-24 01:45:00 +0000 UTC]

Heh, you'd learn it either way.
It's good that you're reading up though, I know I like to see what I can learn from others before I try something new and difficult. Then I just take off and do my own thing anyway. xD
I'll probably have one more tutorial up within the week, and then three more planed for a later time.
