Description
Created for the Return to Ravnica set of Magic: The Gathering. Brief called for the creature to be "pure shadow." A shadow on a wall wouldn't be very interesting so I thought it would be cool to have the top opaque and let it become transparent as it goes down. The perspective stuff was kind of fun, brought back lessons I remembered reading in an old Lee Ame's perspective drawing book as a kid.Related content

The creature type is also "Insect". Was this part of the brief, or was that addition your idea?
Great work, as usual!

The general look of the creatures were outlined in their style guide which was kind of a cross between an insect and a crab. But really big.

That's oddly specific.
I love hearing what the Wizard's art director requests for each card. You never really see that on our end, and it's very interesting to compare what they request and how the artist interprets it.

It sort of reminds me of the Shadows from Babylon 5, very creepy and very cool. And one of the few times I've seen the "Shadow creature" effect done well, great work!

It's a bit bigger than a B5 Shadow, but that aside, it looks almost exactly like one.

I didn't want the bottom of the creature to become completely lost so I thought giving it a strong cast shadow would help define its three dimensional location. I borrowed the idea from the No-Face character in Miyazaki's Spirited Away film.

haha it is pretty sweet, it makes the creature feel like it's more solid while still be so shadow like
