Description The patriarch of the cardinals in my garden can be identified by the scar on his beak. This photo is cropped to 5x7 for the sale of cards, because cardinal cards sell. "Chirp", as I call him, has been the model in my best selling cards, due to his vibrant breast and attitude of ownership. I feed him expensive cardinal seed purchased from a bird-watching pal who owns the store where my cards sell. In fact, the sale of the cards pays for the seed that Chirp eats, so he is a self-employed bird in his own right. I have found that the cards we can buy over Deviant Art are the best quality I can get for the money. Photograph taken in my in my garden in Kansas City, in beautiful soft light.

Nice shot, but the bird is not exactly on focus.
Anyway I like the color and the composition!

I love the idea that this "self-employed" bird is earning his keep in premium bird seed..
Another great shot - and time for card buying is fast approaching - se comment I have "tagged" onto the conversation below with Teresa.... I think the cards will delight family and friends alike - and if we can help keep the wild life in your oasis in the best of vitals....

Is the white balance set correctly. The bird is a beautiful shade of red but the branch looks to be too blue/green

I honestly don't know, Lionel, since I didn't touch the colors, but it was cloudy and the light seemed very soft overall. The background carries the same tones, which makes me feel it was the particular light on a particular day, something which I have noticed varies greatly. Generally, I don't mess with the light balance settings in the camera, something I always did with film. I will try to learn more.

I always have my WB set to auto. I've never taken photos of wildlife but I'm assuming that taking the time to set the WB could mean the difference between getting the shot and missing it.

More recently I've been messing with setting the WB in the camera. Seems to make a world of difference but then this has been a studio setting where I can control the light. I'll experiment more later in the year when the weather becomes more favorable but I've seen things called an expo disc or a white balance lens cap that allow you to easily set the correct balance even when your in the field.

You have an interesting collection over all. Interesting use of colour

Now I'll sound really stupid, but I will admit that once I bought one of those disks, and couldn't figure it out. I need to get more aggressive with my camera, I guess. I became lazy when film died out and I went digital. The new cameras are too smart!

I'm having the same issue. I never really used film but I got the whole experience of developing it way back went so I know the some of the challenges with going digital. My probably is remembering all of the little things you can do to improve the quality of the image before you take the picture and bring it into PhotoShop. After all PhotoShop isn't a tool that was available to a photographer. You would have had to manually re-touch by hand.

The Nikon I have is really easy to set the w/b and only takes a couple of seconds. I saw a tutorial for setting it on a canon and it looks a little more involved and there was a couple of ways to do it. The other thing I though of after I replied last, is the use of a circular polarizer. No halm in trying.

Its just because I love the birds, so the garden seems larger than life. Its a small garden with lots of birds, and I put them under a microscope. I am satisfied in their observation, so the magnificent part is that I am made so happy in so little!

I just placed an order of these as cards, by the way. Plus the rough legged hawk, since it sold out.
