A charming photo of a lovely bird. Well, it’s a cardinal and it’s not shy with all those red feathers. It’s not hiding – not that it can, the way it’s colored, of course. The photographer captured its personality in this one shot: inquisitive, bold and self-confident. It’s looking right at the camera, curiosity in its gaze; it’s not afraid or wary and it’s cocking its head like any smart person or someone who knows he’s worth admiring. It’s nice that the stem it’s on divides the photo in half, as if it’s on a stage and we’re the audience looking up at it. The two leaves from either side are like curtains that have just been swept open to present this magnificent crimson cardinal to our view. It’s a captivating picture mainly because he’s staring right at us while we’re staring back. So, who’s really watching who?

I just love the way he's staring at the camera (at the viewer). He's got so much personality - is it this bird's habit to sit and watch?

He sees the lens.

so he's a poser?
if you stand without the camera and stare at him, wouldn't he look back? Is it something about the glass lens that attracts him? we had reflective glass windows once, but took them down when birds kept flying into them.
