Description
Going into his fifth spring, and with his beak well mended, my old friend, Chirp, is still the most beautiful cardinal in the garden here in Kansas, especially when the setting January sun strikes his feathers right. I have great affection for the old bird, because he was the first to welcome me to Kansas. As you can see, his right leg is broken, and does not grip the branch. This wound came to my attention first in my photo, "Exit Up", which won me a DD. His broken leg is obvious there, but no one mentioned it. Our vision is always constrained by what we expect to see, unless our hearts are tuned to the other, as is the case of my own heart towards Chirp. If you blow up this image, his wound is obvious.Related content

Hi, Julia. Sorry to take so long getting back to you. This photo was taken with an antiquated Canon 1D Mark III. They don't make them any more, but you could probably pick none up used pretty cheap. An excellent bird camera, if one can get close. Thanks for the compliment.

I love the color and the lighting on this male cardinal. It's one of the best cardinal photos I've seen.

Thanks, Ann. Because of all of the storms, waiting out the good light has been hard this winter. I know I can do better, which frustrates me.

Birds are experts at not calling attention to their injuries - it's essential to their survival. Unfortunately, this same talent extends to pet birds, and makes it very hard to know when to bring them to the vet.

I can hardly see any damage any more to the beak. He certainly is radiant in the light.

Who knows how long he will survive on just one leg, but I will give him free seed as long as I can.

I didn't catch the broken leg. I'm not sure I know what to look for. I'll look at the other image. So resilient, so fragile.
