Description Chirp made a surprise appearance, after a long absence, due to having been chased off by one of his grandchildren last year. He is easily identified by the scar on his beak, the result of a break that I had thought would be his undoing. Thankfully, that was not the case, as you can see in this very poor light. He was the first cardinal to come to my feeder four years ago, when I moved in and started feeding the birds. The male that I call, "Flame" now rules the garden in his place, and is one of his many descendants.

Welcome back, Chirp! That is pretty amazing, Rene. Do you know how he got the scar?

Looks like it was a nasty break.  Did he lose everything forward?

I think it actually mended, somehow. Otherwise, there would be no scar.

Amazing in either case.

What really amazes me, Steven, is the minimum age of the bird, which I know to be at least four, given the mark. I think that's a long time for such a delicate creature to survive in the wild.

Life is such a fragile thing -- and amazingly tough.
