It is usually difficult for me to achieve proper white balance on the "cheeks" of a Carolina chickadee, but this particular exposure seems to have it right, as he perches for a moment on a branch of the mulberry tree, the leaves of which give proportion to his diminutive size. With a maximum length of 4.75", he tucks into his environment with a snug fit, and never fails to cheer me with sound and sight.Related content

The little chickadee looks great here and you have captured the tones of the white cheeks perfectly.

I am strangely pleased with the photograph, Erin, because they are so hard to get a good exposure on. One good one shows it is all luck and great patience for the light and the bird to converge. Its an awful lot of life packed into one tiny creature. I didn't filter for noise, fearing I'd lose some detail in those feathers. He's the father, I think, of two chicks this year. They are fatter and cuter, of course, not worn, as he is, from the duties of fatherhood.
