Hi Everyone,
I'm announcing that I've invited friends and colleagues to post in my journal, to share information and insight with the Deviant Art community.

First Post - a request from Angela, who handles my art:

Hello Deviants!
A question for all of you:  If you had a choice would you like to see and play an app or mobile game from one of Clive's classic books, such as Imajica or from an entirely new mythology?  Many thanks for sharing your opinions.

Best, Angela

I think Weaveworld would have the broadest audience attraction for those who have read (or not read) Clive's books. Also, Weaveworld as a game concept could easily be configured to attract both the very young and old in the gaming community. Contact me if you have any other questions!

Cabal would be a good one, so would Weaveworld. Pretty much anything from The Books of Blood. Of course Imajica. It's like the mirror image of Silmarillion, and I do adore Pie O Pah.

I always imagined Imajica would become a huge feature film, like the Lord of the Rings movies (but better, obviously). I can't imagine any of Clive Barkers novels being turned into an app game, they're just too good. However, the game that he actually was involved in making, Jericho....I love love loved it...til the end. Then I was disappointed. I've played Jericho several times because it was such an amazing story to watch unfold....I'd just like a better ending to it.

Oh yes...... I think a game involving the Lament configuration would be ideal. Given the visual and tactile nature of touch screen smart phones moving and revolving the cube through environments and combinations would be simply....... addictive..... !

Hell bound Heart game with a horrific rubik's cube and turning the cube's faces unleashes all hell(joke). The Inhuman Condition like game where you play the game and learn about complex knots and fundamental reality. Games break ideas and mythologies down to a simplistic level for cheap entertainment; you can almost tell some movie's scenes are specifically filmed for a potential game. Weaveworld ; desperately search for Eden in a dimension hanging on your wall? Imajica , has been played up with the cards and roleplaying, has a small strong base: what an awesome read that was, plane shiftingly wonderful. Damnation Game, which is coming to the big screen soon? Maturin and Marlowe would have loved this novel; killers, whores, immortality, but not a good game in that. Great and Secret Show , keep the other dimensional beings at bay and from our realm by consumption of a wondrous drink? Hey, In the Hills, the Cities: in the rts you build your city up with upgrades; farms and rope technology, etc...and the opposing city's inhabitance then construct their massive giant of flesh, rope, and harnesses. Lets get ready to rumble. Sounds cool, but rts are by nature cool. Odd how well I can envision such a game, bodies flying away after a punch , great graphics.

Small budget, something quick like an app; go with an Imajica type app because the book is fu*$ing awesome and the myth surrounding the text is rich and savored by fans, almost like Candy...Card app games can be really neat and fun if done right (Mr. Barker would have to do the art of course, selling point) . Pokemon card game for gameboy , now that was a game. Clive Barker and Tom Holland suck (not really, but I am pissed), they both need (and I plead on bent knee) to write an Imajica level novel, a Slave to my Thirst . Histories and kids books are great but my kingdom for a new, thought out, and horrific novel by Clive Barker!

Galilee was a really good novel, but its been a decade . Mister B. Gone was really good and well crafted; the story , the book-demon, Gutenberg press, the church, mobs, baby baths, fireballs, and the Dantesque nature of the pit of hell was really good. How about a demon escaping his family and coming to the surface like dig dug ? Bound at the press.

Personally, I'd love another console game, much like Jericho--but seeing as how Jericho is already getting a sequel, it would be awesome to play an app/mobile too.

I think it would be a pretty cool idea, and could potentially work for any of Clive's novels. Imajica, The Books of the Art, Weaveworld -- any of them have so many hints at other things to be seen and happening behind what he presents to us in his stories. I think of what was done on Discordia based off of Stephen King's Dark Tower series, mixed with something like the wild, fun artwork of something like the CastleAge game on Facebook. I think there could be some interesting ideas in that!

It's a tough call; Mr. Barker's classic books have amazing worlds; Imajica, the Weave, even running around with Cabal would make for an enjoyable game, especially if it isn't an MMO. At the same time, an MMO style game with people running around with names like 'Gentle1lol' might detract from the experience of well-loved worlds like Imajica or Abarat. Therefore I would encourage a new mythology for a game if it is an MMO with the understanding that if it is an MMO, most people don't delve too deeply into the story.

ronniemick [2012-06-21 13:16:15 +0000 UTC]

I would love to see Mr. Barker's imagination run rampant in an original open-world sandbox-style game. If any previous world were to be adapted, though, an open-world game set in Imajica's Five Dominions would be brilliant. Maybe too big in scale for mobile gaming, but if you were going to adapt any of the mythologies, this would be a great start.

Two cents worth: provided.

Abarat would be great as it is such a flexible story full of characters that are fresh in most people's minds - characters that have a bit of ambiguity, to allow for personalization.
Of course, any app or game connected with any of the Barker stories or created worlds would perk my interest!

Perhaps something that crosses over characters? An new world of Clive with guest appearances from any story.... *grin* something that would make any hard core fan want to explore the whole thing, to see if they can pick out/recognize different characters. (and perhaps inspire them to read the stories they haven't yet!)

I'd go with an original mythology. Like some others have said, previous attempts at story-telling games for phones haven't been the greatest. I think something brand new would allow one more creative freedom. Trying to turn a pre-existing story and concept into something that suits the medium can be limiting creatively.

Mister B. Gone took advantage of its medium to do something interesting with it, making the book literally seem to come to life in your hands. Perhaps a similar approach to an app/mobile game would produce some interesting results? Not necessarily making your phone or tablet say "Smash this phone" or whatnot, but taking advantage of the medium to tell an appropriate story in the same way.

Though, come to think of it, it would be creepy to have your phone possessed by a demon like Mister B.

I actually create graphics for apps/games and think to have The Hellbound Heart would be amazing! You could go so in depth with the ideas in the book and films and take the user to a world never experienced before. But to be honest, you could do that with most of your work, they are pretty expansive worlds so any of them could make amazing game environments! Can't wait to see what does come out!!
