Description
Nova wandered around trying to track down Charlie’s mind signal. It had been awhile since the scuffle, and Nova was being lazy in her search. Nova had sent Sparky and Fleta off to find some food and a few other errands to allow her some time to find Charlie.Nova found a small park with a few small rolling green hills with maple seedlings in wire fences and a few great oak trees with wide branches. A wooden bench or two and a few random bushes were scattered here and there. Charlie was found huddled under the fading shadow of a growing maple tree. The tree was one of the largest of the many dinky maples and its leaves were the soft golden yellow of golden delicious apples with edges singed with a dark red. The sky was a soft pale blue as the sun began to set on the clear sky. A hint of soft pink hovered above the horizon.
Nova calmly approached Charlie whose head was rested on his knees which were tightly bound by his arms. His eyes were red and glazed from tears and stared wide-eyed into the distance.
Nova sat herself down next to him, cross legged. She rested her hand gently on Charlie’s and caressed him. She could feel him sniffling heavily through her palm. Nova cocked her head toward Charlie’s. Nova sighed softly, stared at the pale sky then back at Charlie. She closed her eyes and focused.
Charlie, she whispered softly into Charlie’s mind. Charlie raised his head and looked solemnly into Nova’s lavender eyes. Nova sensed a calmness in Charlie as if staring into her concerned but radiant purple eyes would cure everything in the world. Charlie sat up, gathered himself together, sniffled one last time before leaning backon the fence surrounding the tree. Nova pushed her handfurther up on top his back and kneaded his dark hair with its auburn tint between her fingers.
Charlie, there is something I need to tell you. Something you need to understand.
Charlie looked at Nova solemnly. His eyes were red and puffy and his eyelashes were damp. “Why Nova? Why did I kill him? I didn’t mean to kill him.” Charlie’s voice wavered and croaed as he spoke, the after effects of a good cry.
“Keep your voice low,” Nova instructed softly. “I know you didn’t mean to kill him. It was out of self-defense. And survival.”
“Hmm?” Charlie was confused and bewildered.
“I should have told you about the pursuers the night you joined me. That is what I need to tell you. I can never remember ever killing anyone without reason. These guards, er pursuers want to kill us. Charlie, we need to survive. It’s kill or be killed.”
“Why would they want to kill us?”
“We know too much. I do, anyways. But you’ve seen what I can do. You know what Sparky has learned to do, and what Fleta is beginning to do. And you know very well what you just did. Those people in the city? Well, they’re normal, they can’t do things like we do…”
Charlie seemed to hesitate. “So?”
“The truth is we’re not normal,” Charlie rolled his eyes slightly at this. Nova continued, “In fact, I don’t know if we’re actually human. Have you ever wondere why you know what things are and how they work but you don’t even know your own identity?”
Charlie nodded. Nova continued: “You see, we aren’t exactly people. We were designed not to be.”
“You are.”
“Hm?”
“You are a person, designed or not. Me, I can’t control anything. I’ve strangled a man with ease. You, Nova, you can do amazing thngs. Like that one time with those buletts that was cool. Besides, you took the time to take me with you, as well as the tohers and protect us all. Absolutely amazing.”
“Thanks,” Nova said as she blushed before she hardened her tone again. “You saved me from being Tasered.”
“Oh but, you are so, so perfect.”
“Charlie, every hero has their weakness.”
“That’s not true.”
“Yes it is!” Nova struck her words harshly at Charlie. She sighed, “I’m sorry, but even I have a weakness. Like supernovas, I guess, I can give off a burst (or bursts) or energy that overcome what seems like anything, but then I die off. I, I faint. I can’t use too much power otherwise I drain myself.”
Charlie remained silent for awhile.
“C’mon, I’m sure Sparky and Fleta are worried. They’re supposed to have a nice dinner too.” Nova coaxed. Is that why I chose Charlie to join me? Nova pondered. Yes, I’m going to need someone to cover my back when I do faint- or die off. Nova made so Charlie could barely receive this but barely register it in his mind.
Nova took a deep breath. It hurt her to think that at one time, no one considered her a person. Just a number.
