Description
Graham's Pippet Attack
It was a good day. Better than most for Graham as of late. He woke up before the sun had risen and started on prep work for the bakery, making sure to have fresh loaves of bread ready for the early rising farmers and their families who always stopped by just at daybreak like clock work. After the rush was over he kept himself busy, not letting himself feel the quiet of his home. It had never been quiet with his father around, he could be a little clumsy and clanked into everything around him. It only got worse as Graham himself got older and they constantly bumped into one another. But now the space felt too big, too empty with him gone. It was going to be a long adjustment.
Knocking was heard from the large serving window. Graham set aside the broom he was carrying and pulled open the window to a slender feminine pouf, "Hello there Bailey, what can I get you?" He asked with a smile glad to have some company even if it was for a short amount of time.
“Hi Graham! Can I get one blueberry muffin please?” She smiled back with those big dark eyes.
“Sure thing, you go ahead and take a seat at the table, I’ll bring it out to you. Such a nice day I ought to be doing chores outside.” He has he pulled the window down after she nodded in agreement turning from the window to go take a seat at one of the tables.
It didn’t take him much time at all let the door’s golden bell jingle as he exited the building bringing her a cup of tea with her muffin. Setting it down on the table he would speak, “Enjoy Bailey. Is there anything new happening with you?” He opened with small talk as he began to move some of the other tables apart for more walking space between them.
Bailey had taken a bite of the muffin and mumbled her response, Graham didn’t quite catch it before they were interrupted by another pouf, large in size and dark colorings. It was Rusty, a fellow baker. They had known each other when they were young and still remained friends even after he moved to Citremery. They often visited each other’s shop since they were in the same business.
“Graham, Graham! Have you seen any of those critters about?” Rust asked, excitement still high in his voice.
Graham stopped with what he was doing to stare at the big dark pouf, “Critters? I’m not sure I follow what you’re talking about.”
“Those things that escaped from Amaryllis place! Pips.. Pipers.. Puppies…” Rust ran through a list of words only seeming to confuse himself at this rate.
“Pippets!” said Bailey from her table looking mighty proud of herself to know what they were technically called.
Graham gave them both a little bit of a confused smile, “Can’t say I’ve heard anything about it. Should I see anything I’ll be sure to let you know though.” He turned from him and started to push the wooden crates he kept outside as higher seats for the smaller pixie poufs who needed more of a reach to get to the tables. Nudging aside a basket of overripe apples.
Something blue and white flashed under the basket skittering away from moving basket. Graham hopped back with a start, wide eye he watched the crates for a second longer.
“Graham…? You okay there?” Called out Rust who watched his friend’s nervous display.
Graham blinked out of his daze and turned to face Rust and Bailey, “Y-yeah, I’m fine. I thought I saw some---yiipe!!” He yelped jumping again as something yanked on the fur of his tail, it was heavier than normal and he lifted it to take a look.
Dread filled his face as he bit back a scream, if there was one thing Graham did not like it was bugs. The bigger the worst his reaction. And the weird beetle like creature latched onto his tail sent him running.
“OFF!! GET OFF!!” He yelled bouncing and kicking trying to whip his tail side to side, it only made the little creature pinch harder to the thick fur of his tail. Graham too busy staring at his backside darted forward knocking over a table and crashing past Rust.
“HOLD ON GRAHAM, STOP BUGGING OUT!” He snorted a little to himself as he tried chasing after Graham’s tail who still refused to stop lashing back and forth, “That’s one of them, that’s a pippet!” He called out trying to calm him down. It didn’t seem to be working as another table toppled over from Graham’s thrashing.
Bailey sat quietly at her table as a round green bird like creature plopped down on the table too. “Oh.” She blinked looking at it, “Came for the show, huh?” She giggled a bit for herself and nudged a bit of muffin to the green pippet who pecked at it.
Rust had finally had enough of Graham’s nonsense and ended up dog piling on top of him to get him to sit still long enough for him to nip the blue pippet off of his tail. Graham just laid on the ground trying to catch his breath and stop shaking.
Walking over to Bailey he set down the shocked blue pippet on the table, “Since you already got that one, can you take this one back to Amaryllis too?”
Bailey with a mouthful nodded happily and scooted some muffin crumbs to the cowering blue pippet, food always helped her keep her calm down so maybe it’d work for the pippets too. Once she finished off her muffin she gathered up the pippets and took them with her, “Hush now, I’m taking you home now.” She cooed to them as she nudged them into a basket.
Rust had gone back to Graham who was still flat on the ground, “Awww, it was just a little bitty thing, no reason to overreact.” he tried to say with a straight face, but it didn’t last as his face twisted with chuckles.
“S-shut up.” Graham stammered and stumbled to get up. Rust bumped him up with his shoulder. His friend seemed to take the hint to stop with his teasing, though it didn’t keep him from a snort of a laugh here and there. Together they started picking up the tables again and putting everything back where it belonged.
MY SECOND ENTRY FOR THE PIPPET PROMPT. I almost didn't make it in time.... I normally take time to recover and nap after PT but this time I decided to be insane and push myself hard. Took some crying, a handful of pain killers, and simplifying my ideas but I got it done in time! ;v; I'm going to lie down now.......
Thank you TidalCast and juliafliess for letting me borrow Rust and Bailey for this prompt!

Thank you so much for allowing me to use bailey again! It was so much fun to include her and when I saw your prompt with her I had to make sure she took them all away for poor Graham before he had a heart attack!

I'm so sorry for my late reply here!
And eeee, I'm just so happy you enjoyed this piece and I didn't totally butcher poor Rust! I was reeeeally tired by the time I wrapped it up and struggling to finalize it. I can't believe I even got the written stuff down from how sick I was, but I'm super proud to have gotten it all done!
Sorry if anything seemed over stepping, I just took liberties with writing - so none of this has to be canon at all unless you're fine with it! I figure small farming villages everyone just knows everyone like where I grew up.
