Description This is a commission I did of a bar scene where characters from the Vertigo comic series "The Preacher" hang out in a bar with the main character from the Vertigo comic series "Transmetropolitan" (the former story written by the inimitable Garth Ennis and the latter by Warren Ellis*). From left to right, we have Cassidy, Jesse Custer, and Tulip (all three characters in "The Preacher") and, at the end of the bar, Spider Jerusalem ("Transmetropolitan"). Spider is telling a raunchy story to the bar's inhabitants, much to the amusement of Jesse and Cassidy (Tulip, however, is none too pleased).

I love drawing commissions like this but, alas, don't get too many along these lines.

*EDIT: Originally, I stated that both "Preacher" and "Transmetropolitan" were written by Ennis but several commenters set me right, stating that Ennis wrote one comic and Warren Ellis the other. I've since corrected the error. Thanks for the correction, folks.

Ohmigosh! Two of my favorite series -- together in one place! <3 I love how Spider and Jesse and Cassidy are hitting it off right away, too, haha. ("The air's gone blue", indeed!)

Poor Tulip. She needs to get out of that bar before she slips on the testosterone...

The insane detail and great charcoaly-yet-inky feel of this drawing really makes it stand out -- I was squinting at it for ages! Great job!

Wow. Thanks for the multitude of compliments. I love that gritty Vertigo style, so this was one commission I could really sink my teeth into. I'm also a huge Ennis fan, so it was a pleasure drawing his characters.

Oh man. What can I say that people have not already said? Masterful composition, stuffed to the brim with immaculate detail and full of great personality! Certainly conveys the story you were trying to tell without you explaining it in words. You are one heck of an illustrator, mad props Zac.

Ps. Two different writers, Ennis and Ellis.

Nice character poses and details on this one, Zac! The angle and actions really animate this one and it comes to life as you look at all the imagery and small details at the full view.

How long did this one take from start to finish?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cluedog In reply to dragyourblood [2008-11-11 04:33:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much, Dragyourblood. This one took me about 3 months to complete, although I worked on it in small spurts. I had to find a busload of references to give the place as authentic a feel as I could. Whew!
