Description
This is a commission I did of a bar scene where characters from the Vertigo comic series "The Preacher" hang out in a bar with the main character from the Vertigo comic series "Transmetropolitan" (the former story written by the inimitable Garth Ennis and the latter by Warren Ellis*). From left to right, we have Cassidy, Jesse Custer, and Tulip (all three characters in "The Preacher") and, at the end of the bar, Spider Jerusalem ("Transmetropolitan"). Spider is telling a raunchy story to the bar's inhabitants, much to the amusement of Jesse and Cassidy (Tulip, however, is none too pleased).I love drawing commissions like this but, alas, don't get too many along these lines.
*EDIT: Originally, I stated that both "Preacher" and "Transmetropolitan" were written by Ennis but several commenters set me right, stating that Ennis wrote one comic and Warren Ellis the other. I've since corrected the error. Thanks for the correction, folks.

Thanks! Ennis is an amazing writer. I'm fondest of his comic "Hitman" and his take on the comic "The Demon". He's got a twisted sense of humor I just love.

Steve Dillon (the artist on Preacher) did lots of work for 2000ad in the 80's and 90's.
I used to have an old stack of them, and remember going back through them and realizing "holy crap, it's Steve Dillon!" when seeing his distinctive style. So the style would be very familiar.
I wish he'd do more stuff, after he left Wolverine: Origins, I'm not sure what he's up to.

Thanks, Dave! I appreciate it, man.
PS. I screwed up. Ellis was the main writer of "Transmetropolitan", although I think Ennis did write a few mini-series.

Ok, I know this is my 3rd comment, but it'll only let me fave it *once*.
I just now downloaded the larger scan of this (don't know why I didn't before) and looked at more of the detail in the pic.
You fvcking rule. You just fvcking rule. Dalgoda lager? Brilliant! Booze with a naked chick on the label! Awesome!
The only problem here is that I think I'm going to have to spend more money on commissions from you, if they're going to be this farking good and detailed!

I'm a detail-aholic. When somebody commissions me, I take it very seriously and try to give them more than what they asked for. I also like to throw in tiny details to see if people are looking. It's something I admired about the legendary cartoonist Carl Barks. He would always throw in small gags in the background. That's what I tried to do here.
Dalgoda Lager, by the way, has a sweet aftertaste. I highly recommend trying it.

That would be cool. But now I think all Vertigo characters besides Hellblazer, Swampthing, and Sandman are all creator owned.

Very cool! You capture the characters excellently.
Just to me a nerd, Transmetropolitan was written by Warren Ellis. Both came out about the same time and both writers used the titles to talk about whatever the hell they wanted to.

Thanks! You're absolutely right, I goofed. Vertigo has produced some fantastic comics, although my favorite series is probably is Neil Gaiman's "Sandman".

Man youre a genius, I tried to analyze it to find out why I think its so kick ass, and Ive come to my conclusion... youre patience is through the roof man. The way you drew and shaded each brick is amazing and the way that you designed the under side of the counter and the dishes is just brilliant. Great work pimpin^^

Thanks! I had to use a ton of source images to get the little details in. Dalgoda7 ( ), the fellow who commissioned this piece, wrote a very descriptive outline, so much of the things in the image are actually his idea. I just drew them (although tiny details like the smoking rat are mine).

Not meaning to be the nit-picky nerd, but Transmetropolitian was actually written by Warren Ellis. Still, both are bad ass books, and your rendition of everyone is super bad ass.
Great details and body language for the characters. And a smoking rat! What a nasty dude!
