It sure would be heartening if artists added Spike to pics like this regardless of what happened in the episode. Such a trend would make for a nice, gratifying middle finger to canon.

So do I, of course. But the parts of the show that leave Spike outta the picture while rounding up "all" six ponies are fairly disheartening; those parts I wouldn't mind giving the finger.
We all know he's not a central character, but he has no other friends besides the M6, and those scenes feel like reminders that he contributes nothing to the group and barely has a place among his friends...who are essentially his family.
It'd be wonderful, and pretty cool, if artists made a habit of reinterpreting scenes from episodes like Wonderbolts Academy, Daring Don't, or Maud Pie just to inconspicuously slip him in as if he were already there. Like saying, "Oh, one of Twi's friends was missing from this episode... Let's fix that real quick!"
