10/10 would play. I'd love an MLP platformer on the Game Boy!

Awesome picture.Β Makes me think back to when I played my old game boy, a lot of fond memories there.Β My only complaint is that it makes me desperately want to play whatever this is, and I'm pretty sure that that's not possible.Β Looks like it would be a fun game.

From the thumbnail I thought this was Bon Bon, and the objective was to catch her floating house!

I WAS going to hand draw all the ponies for the RPG I'm making but this convinced me that Pixel ponies would look much better. This artwork is incredible and probably saved me hours of trying different art styles. I'll try my hand at simulating this style for the hundreds of sprites and animations I need.
Β Thank you for making this!!

Awesome! In my opinion, Pixel art isn't just quaint nostalgia, but can also be very beautiful. Not just the old genuine 8 and 16 bit games, but also modern re-imaginations like Fez, Sword & Sworcery and Hyper Light Drifter, to name just a few.

I made a mock-up for the game I'm making with a Clover the Clever sprite based on this picture. It looks a lot better with pixels instead of Gimp vectors. Now I just have to experiment with animation and poses. Your style really is incredible.

Wow, and with only using 4 colors. Your skills are much.Β

Yes, please! You've adapted the pony-style perfectly.

Looks pretty awesome. Totally ignoring the fact, that the orginal Game Boy only was limited to 4 scales of grey.

Thanks! And if you look carefully there are only four shades of grey there.

Yes, you are right, pasted the image into an 8-bit greyscale Photoshop file.
Its really only 4 shades indeed. Well, actually only 3, if you don't count the background color.
I hereby withdraw my initial comment for proven wrong.
But TheSind is right, next time better initially save as lossless PNG with indexed color palette.

you should've saved it as a .png though. JPG looses a lot of quality.
compare the image on this page with this one (reduced colors to 4 and saved as png): i.imgur.com/ONnbGfG.png
you'll notice a difference in sharpness

Actually, that image uses indexed colors instead of RGB(sigh)
Take a look a this one instead:Β i.imgur.com/tdmZ3CA.png

That definitely looks a lot more crisp. Have to learn how indexed colors work, never really figured that out.
Funny thing though, the unsharp look was sorta intentional. I actually blurred the red channel very slightly to get a hint of the photographic look that you get when the color channels don't match perfectly... So it's a bit of a stupid artistic experimentation that just turned out to look like crappy jpg compression.

I don't think it's just the intended blurring though, but also jpeg compression. I can't check now, but I'd wager that you'll find blurring in the blue and green channels too. and I bet the picture is also blurred on sub-pixel level(since the picture is scaled up)

cmaggot In reply to TheSind [2014-02-17 22:51:06 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, no doubt. It's a jpeg after all, so there's bound to be some unwanted quality loss in there. I will take you guys advice and go for a png the next time.

Cool. Be nice if had color, but pretty awesome nevertheless! I'm kinda wondering what sort of game mechanic this would have. Obviously it'd be some kind platformer...
It'd be hilarious if you had to zap the parasprites before they ate the backdrop.
