Description
The original D&D basilisk design was what I knew first, that multi-legged reptilian beast, and I think it will always be the 'true' idea of what a basilisk is to me. Going into this I knew more or less where I could cut corners and hide mistakes or rather just not spend that much time on them, because mentally I knew it would be pretty covered, mostly out of sight. So the lower left hind quarters are almost completely unrendered beneath that layer of fog, as is the pillar the basilisk is perched on.

The detailing work I wanted to put a lot of emphasis was on the facial features of the basilisk along with the allusion to this weird, almost wrinkly skin; it's still gestural but the folds get some of that bouncy light coming out of the gaze.

This version was with an additional 50 seconds or so of post-timer work, super simple duplication of the flattened piece, setting it overlay, and then masking off the area nearest the face and brightening up the rest of the layer so that it's similar to the original image but with a stronger punch of contrast near the face to draw your attention there more.
