Ultra-simple, just an old dude with gradients of luminous funk-fakery cascading down over his facade. I knew more or less how I wanted to tackle the light sourcing so I spent more time noodling with his face than I normally would have for something so prominent; I tend to focus on a single aspect of the spitpaint and it's usually something small, large elements tend to become part of a background study or something.

The unexpected turn I took with this was spending a few minutes playing with the Subtract blending mode. I did a fill of a layer with a drab teal color and then started selecting the layers of gradients that were set to screen or color dodge and deleting from the subtract-layer. I liked the effect so I stuck with it, but also added a layer of vivid light, played with the hue slider till it hit about a mauve-ish kind of color and I liked the mix that it created, something that gave the darkness a bit of a richer, velvety texture, not necessarily black although some spots get pretty close, but a deep saturation of color. Couple that with the sectioned out gradients against the subtract layer and it created this rich darkness with the old man's face illuminated from above
