Description 30min. spitpaint done in Photoshop CS6.

I had this Journey-esque vision of a monk in red floating above a very high rocky ledge in the clouds, like, near the edge of heaven and earth. He floats a couple of feet over the outcropping, just a touch closer to tranquility than the rest of us could possibly hope for.

Thank you very much Β The 30min time limit tends to just push me in one direction and I force myself to run with it and hope for the best hehe.

I like this. Do have your own custom brush set or do you use defaults?

Thanks I use a few from Darek Zabroki's free bush set:

I *think* I got this brush I use for smudging in here, it's called Oil Pastel 121. Β If it's not there let me know and I'll give you a link to download it from my site, I use it to create a lot of the wispy smoky effects in my work

Agh, how do I use it? The greyish background becomes part of the brush stroke and messes it up. Am I missing something?

What are your settings right now? Are you working on a new layer or the original? Β What I usually do is I have my background layer and various elements are on their own layer, those I paint/smudge individually; I tend to go overboard on layers though hehe, which leads to gigantic files. Β If you're smudging on a new layer make sure you turn off "Sample All Layers" so that it only smudges/plays with the pixels on that particular layer.

I see. I use Photoshop CC, so my setting may be different, but I'll give it a shot. I also made a couple of my own when I got frustrated with the picture. XD Anyways, thanks again!

Yeah CC changed a few tool presets, I read somewhere that the Smudge tool was one of the more affected ones. Β When I was transitioning to a much heavier focus on digital I just kept stumbling and trying hehe... like, yeah, just experiment, try not to get frustrated because the output isn't what you expected but instead embrace what happened, try to figure out why, and then try something different

Most of my painting skill has come from accidents lol

Yeah, I've been doing my fair share of stumbling >_> I just need to experiment with what type of brush makes what look the way does and use that to get what I want. Easy in concept and frustrating as hell in practice, but hey, that's art right?? XD

The biggest initial hurdle for me was finding the hard round brush from CTRLPaint.com; it's a free download in a 3-pack of basic brushes. Β It was the first time I used a brush that felt 'right' to me when I was working. Β Now days I use all types of brushes, digital feels smoother, but without that hard round to jumpstart everything I don't know if I'd be where I am now hehe.
