Yeah I know what you mean.
I try to make the Midna shimeji look as polished as possible, since it'll be something that appears on the screen all the time. Wouldn't want to look at something I wasn't satisfied with, eh?

when do you think she might be done? midna is one of my favourite characters beside vaati, she really stood out in twilight princess <3 <3 <3

At this point it's hard to tell when I will actually finish. But if I don't finish before 2012 has ended I'll never forgive myself. X3 A wild guess would be around summer time. Since one of the busiest months in Norway is May, I don't know if I'll do much work at that period. Last night I was working on the 26th frame, close to be finished, the 27th will be slightly similliar in shape so that might get done faster.

I always had this curiosity for Vaati, ever since reading the Zelda mangas. And I have a lot of love for the 4 Swords and Windwaker mangas, so cute and funny! And for Midna I'll do anything in the game, she's just... kickass. A princess who takes action.

how's this coming along? I'd love to add her to my collection of zelda shimeji

cocohints In reply to idleideas [2012-04-08 14:35:52 +0000 UTC]

Got a bit sidetracked by reading mangas, I'll admit.. BUT I should continue on the idle/self cloning frames once Easter is over with. So it's going slowly, but it's going at least. X3 Thanks for the interest btw.

I hope she'll be nice to any fellow LoZ shimejis once she's complete. >3> They just have a life of their own, it's hard to tell what they'll do. ~

idleideas In reply to cocohints [2012-04-08 16:24:58 +0000 UTC]

Awesome. I hope to add her to the custom shimeji program I'm working on. For most of the ones I have, I've added 1 extra picture (shime47) and edited the action .xml file to use it instead of shime1 when you pic up the shime so that it isn't just a static standup stance when you're holding them still. Copying shime5 works for this in general. it means the OoTLink I'm working on will look more natural when I'm picking him up by his hat. ^.^

I love these things so much.

cocohints In reply to idleideas [2012-04-09 22:31:56 +0000 UTC]

That sounds very brilliant! It looks rather unnatural when you lift them up and it looks like they're still on the ground. Looks like that with Midna as well. >3> Her frame5 kind of looks like it'd belong as a frame47 as it is.

By his hat? My goodness, just imagining that is adorable!

Also, your avatar is addicting to look at. :3

I have a wip of the project with the hanging link here: [link]

Unfortunately I only have GIMP to work with art program wise so the Shimeji set will end up more pixelized than originally planned. But it should at least look clean when I'm finished.

And the avatar is totally addicting to watch. I love it so much.

cocohints In reply to idleideas [2012-04-12 21:34:05 +0000 UTC]

Looks so cute! I especially like the shimeji slamming with the hammer. And you seem to have a good understanding of the position of the mouse with the hanging by the hat frame, like you are actually in contact instead of it just floating.

Clean pixelized is better than a messy white spotted frame. At least that is what I think. It takes extra effort to try keeping them as clean as possible. What size are the dimentions you draw in? I may have small shimejis but I start out big. X3 Though there are times the look of the same frame is different when resized, and I've noticed errors I couldn't see when it was full size. Those moments are frustrating. >>

From what I've seen on your WIP, you've done great with GIMP.

idleideas In reply to cocohints [2012-04-12 21:49:06 +0000 UTC]

I work with it at the 128x128 frame size, actually. The hammer slam is for when he 'throws' the IE windows XD.

Oh I know what you mean by the white spots. I'm dealing with that with the fishing animation and it's pissing me off to no end that my Gimp is telling me I've deleted all that extra space and yet when the animation plays, it still has spots on two of the frames *rawr!*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cocohints In reply to idleideas [2012-04-12 22:04:46 +0000 UTC]

.. whoa, that sounds very difficult. I'd never be able to make a shimeji in 128x128. You have my respect for pulling it off this well.

Sweet, I may have to let him throw the IE window away in that case. Usually I try to prevent them, but this was too cool. On my to-draw list I planned on having Midna find a TP treasure chest she kicks open. Exactly like Link would, really. First plan was to have her use the hair, but then it seemed too complicated to draw so I'll have her kick instead.

Are the white spots by the water, maybe? If so, it may be the brush setting? If it helps, I would always use a pencil setting for everything related to the shimeji because of the hardness of it. Each stroke is in one colour only, set to 100% opacity and no brush effects. Also for the transparent strokes I'd use this tool instead of a soft brush, since I read that it was the cause of those white spots. Instead I use an eraser with low opasity to create the transparent effect. It seems to have been working so far.

idleideas In reply to cocohints [2012-04-12 22:34:03 +0000 UTC]

I tried using the eraser tool for some transparencies like you said just now because I wanted a different effect for my final pull up frame... and it still looks like a blob of spotty fuzz. GIMP treats the eraser took just like the paintbrush it seems *so sad*

cocohints In reply to idleideas [2012-04-15 14:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Aww, sorry to hear that. I don't really have a plan B for that situation. OTL
Hope you'll find a way around it though!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

idleideas In reply to cocohints [2012-04-12 22:07:18 +0000 UTC]

I might just redraw the frames then, since I can't see the spots and my color picker/selector aren't picking them up or saying they're there when they clearly are. And yeah. It was near the water where I used the paint brush for a nice hazy foam effect.

Go, Go, go Q.Q I love Midna xD And I swear you've gotta be the only person on the internet (according to google) who's making one :3 I'd really love this!! Keep going >.👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cocohints In reply to Karaikoro [2012-02-29 14:22:07 +0000 UTC]

I love Midna too, otherwise I'd never bother making a shimeji. X3

lol, it's hard to believe I'm the only one making one. I hope it'll make everyone happy once it is complete. It's certainly gotten much more progress lately, so it isn't that far away now! Currently 25 of 46 frames are complete, the ones I have left are idle and self cloning frames. I'll have to do some brainstorming on these. X3

Karaikoro In reply to cocohints [2012-02-29 21:37:02 +0000 UTC]

Really? That's great!! I only started getting shimeji's last night xD The cloning is such trouble, especially when you go shopping with 2 shimeji's out under the Japanese folder...So you cant delete them all at once D: Bad cloning xD!

How long does a frame take to draw? and its great to see your just over half way there x3! Keep at it!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cocohints In reply to Karaikoro [2012-03-01 17:52:46 +0000 UTC]

They're tons of fun for sure. X3

Whenever they become too many, I just right click the logo and select an option that means something like "leave only one" - a few minutes later they'll keep cloning anyway. The Midna is also a Japanese version btw, I don't really think I have an English version saved. It still works fine though.

It does take a few days. Most of them so far were based on other shimejis' movements, so sketching would go quicker. Then lineart, and colours (especially the hair can be time consuming because it is in shades) and in the end resizing and saving. Sometimes I had to fix some frames because they ended up looking off when added to the shimeji's image folder, that was incredibly annoying whenever it happened. For the remaining frames I'll probably have them differ, so sketching may take longer.

.. I just spent too long on digital stuff. X3 Started this in like summer end 2010, artblocked in 2011, continued this January.

As long as you have patience, you can make it! Though I guess it isn't that uncommon to quit after a few frames, it is a huge project and can become overwhelming. I'll try not to do that.

Aww, that's awesome! Spread the shimejis ~

Sorry... OTL If it helps, there's always some WIPs in my blog link in the artist comment. The frames I am working on now are trickier because those don't follow the original base's movements, but hopefully they'll be awesome still.

I'm making a little Wolf Link/Midna shimeji for myself, and Midna is VERY hard to do, the little details on the head artifact thing especially, all the little designs wont fit in one 280x280 with wolf link included inside as well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cocohints In reply to ZeiaZeh [2012-01-27 22:21:56 +0000 UTC]

A duo? o: I'm having enough space limits just with her alone, but a Wolf Link as well.. They'd have to be incredibly tiny. It may be possible to increase the size of the frames if I recall correctly, but I'm playing it safe with the original size for my shimeji. Maybe there's more information at the shimeji groups on DA about adjusting the frames to your specific shimeji?
At any rate I wish you good luck with pulling it off, Wolf Link/Midna sounds pretty damn sweet.

ZeiaZeh In reply to cocohints [2012-01-28 03:31:16 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, well I found an old frankenturret shimeji from Portal, and I think its a bigger size so I might use that size instead or something, just to test it out. Its quite a pain, and I really shouldn't be doing any of this since I have exams next week but its kind of relaxing. XD;
